Sl1MIVlARY OF AIR ACTIVITY, GUANGZHOU
AIR DISTRICT, CHINA (S)
ABSTRACT
25X1
25X1
1. (S/D) This report summarizes significant air activit and a radin of airfield facilities in the
Guangzhou Air District (GAD) of China betwee The GAD is in 25X1
southeastern China and shares a common border with Vietnam. It consists of Hunan, Guangxi, and Guangdong
Provinces (including Hainan Island and the Paracel Islands).
2. (S/D) Unless otherwise noted, information in this report has been obtained through the analysis
of satellite imagery. This report includes two maps, ten annotated photographs, and three tables.
INTRODUCTION
3. (S/D) Shortly before and during the Chinese/Vietnamese conflict, the numbers and type of aircraft
increased at airfields ir. the GAD close to Vietnam. Defense of these airfields was also upgraded with the
deployment of additional occupied surface-to-air missile (SAM) and antiaircraft artillery (AAA) sites.
4. (S/D) After the conflict, the air order of battle (AOB) and defenses at the airfields returned to
normal. Since then, construction of hardened facilities' at airfields in the GAD has been observed along
with a redeployment of numbers and type of aircraft within the GAD and an influx of new types of
aircraft as well.
5. (S/D) There are 21 operational airfields in the GAD subordinate to the Chinese Air Force (CAF) and
the Chinese Naval Air Force (CNAF). Eighteen of the airfields are permanently occupied. China continues to
upgrade the electronic navigational aids at some of these airfields with the use of precision approach radars
(PAR). All of the CAF and CNAF airfields with the exception of Guiping/Meng-hsu have nondirectional
beacons (NDB; Figure 1 and Table 1).
CAF/CNAF Airfield-Associated AW Radar (within 5 nm)
6. (S/D) At least one AW radar facility is within a 5-nm radius of 18 of the 21 airfields. One exception,
Shoaguan Airfield, has a radar facility within 12 nm of the airfield. No radar facilities were observed near
Leiyang or Guiping/Meng-hsu Airfields (Table 2).
7. (S/D) There are 32 civil, utility, and helicopter airfields in the GAD. Guangzhou Baiyun is the
only international airfield in the GAD and is considered a civil airfield under the authority of the Chinese
Air Administration of China (CAAC). It is the only airfield in the GAD with a complete instrument
landing system (ILS; Figure 2 and Table 3).
Significant Air Activity
8. (S/D) China is improving the units at its airfields with increased numbers and types of aircraft,
including BADGER, FISHBED, and FANTAN A. FARMER aircraft with air-to-air missile (AAM)
capability have been observed in increasing numbers at some of the CAF/CNAF airfields in the GAD.
9. (S/D) Three BADGER aircraft were observed at Leiyang Airfield on This was the 25X1
first time BADGER aircraft had been seen in the GAD. Three to seven BADGER have been seen on
subsequent coverage (Figure 3).
10. (S/D) FISHBED and FANTAN A aircraft were observed for the first time in the GAD on~ 25X1
This was approximately two weeks before the Chinese incursion into Vietnam. 25X1
11. (S/D) Twenty-three FANTAN A and 11 FISHBED were observed for the first time at Tian ang
Airfield on the FISHBED and FANTAN had departed. Between nd 25X1
20 FANTAN were again seen at this airfield (Figure 4). Since up to 13 FARMER G 1X1
with wingtip-mounted pylons have also been observed here (Figure 5).
12. (S/D) Seventeen
ping/Wuyu Airfield on
airfield (Figure 6). Also
observed at this airfield.
nce then, eight to ten FISHBED have been observed at this 25X1
approximately six AAM-capable FARMER D Variantsz were 25X1
13. (S/D) Twenty-four FANTAN A aircraft were observed at Huiyang Airfield on 25X1
Varying numbers of FANTAN A have been seen on subse went covera e (Figure 7). This airfield was not
usually occupied, and no AOB had been seen here since 25X1
14. (S/D) Ten FISHBED aircraft (Figure 8) were first observed at Lingshui Airfield on 25X1
This is the first CNAF airfield to receive FISHBED aircraft of which eight to 12 have been seen on subsequent
coverage. This acquisition significantly upgraded the capabilities of the unit at this airfield.
15. (S/D) Six probable AAM on dollies were observed at Suixi Airfield on OThe AAM were 25X1
near five FARMER on an alert apron near the southwest end of the runway. Probable pylons were outboard of
the wing tanks on at least one of the FARMER.

20. (SAD) Extensions to both ends of the runway have been identified at Suixi Airfield. Other facilities
under construction at this airfield included four hangarettes (Figure 10), a large parking apron near the
southwest end of the runway, and a large parking/refueling apron connecting the northeast end of the runway
with the parallel taxiway. A small parking apron was being constructed adjacent to the parallel taxiway near the
maintenance area.
21. (SAD) A large multiwing bunker (Figure 11) used for possible command and control and 12 small
