STATUS OF SOVIET APVO FOXBAT

1. (S/D) FOXBAT regiments in APVO Stranyy are assigned to 12 airfields in seven of the ten APVO
air defense districts (Figure 1). This report provides imagery-derived information on the numbers and
status of FOXBAT assigned to APVO Stranyy fields during the perio
[::::]Aircraft counts are based on the latest clear, complete coverage. Information is provided in Table I
and is keyed to Figure 1.
2. (S/D) In addition, details of FOXBAT status at the three FOXBAT repair depots, two flight test
centers (FTC), Murom Airfield (the APVO training base for higher aviation), and Gorkiy/Sormovo
Airfield (the flyaway field for the Gorkiy Airframe Plant Ordzhonikidze 21 which is the
production facility) are provided in Table 2, which is also keyed to Figure 1.

"The recent sightings of FOXBAT A at Krasnovodsk Airfield suggest that this is a permanent deployment to this air
'base. Krasnovodsk is near the Iranian border and in an ideal location to function as a FOXBAT interceptor base.
These aircraft were probably deployed from Vasilkov Airfield in the Kiev Air Defense District, since only 14
FOXBAT were seen at Vasilkov when it was last imaged. There are only 12 hangarettes at Vasilkov, which
precludes the remainder of the usual 35-36 FOXBAT seen here from being hidden in hangarettes. All other
FOXBAT regiments have remained at near normal strengths. FOXBAT A are no longer being delivered to the
APVO and are only produced for foreign sale, which precludes this sighting as being a possible delivery of new
aircraft from the production facility at Gorkiy.
