IRAQ/IRAN MILITARY SUMMARY
1. (S/D) This report updates the most recent' in a series of imagery-derived reports on the Iraq/Iran
conflict and covers the period This report discusses deployed ground forces in the
forward area, rear garrison units (Figure 1), airfields, naval bases, commerical shipping, POL facilities,
and related activity in South Yemen. Military unit designators and subordination (where used) are derived
from collateral sources.2 Acronyms and abbreviations are defined in a glossary at the end of the report.
Additional reports will be issued as the situation changes.
2. (S/D) Imagery of the forward areas of conflict during the reporting period showed the Iranian
forces still in control of Abadan, Ahvaz, Dezful, and Pol-E Zahab. Iraqi and Iranian positions in these
areas remained relatively unchanged.
3. (S/D) Four Iraqi and three Iranian rear area garrisons/facilities were imaged during the reporting
period. The Iraqi 8th Mechanized Infantry Brigade remained out of garrison, and a tank company and 100
APC departed another installation in the Baghdad area. Major elements of the three brigades in the
Iranian 77th Infantry Division stationed in northeastern Iran had departed their respective garrisons byC
Also, evidence of a possible callup of civilians for military duty and/or the possible requisition of
civilian vehicles for military functions was observed in three areas of Iran.
4. (S/D) Four Iraqi and 15 Iranian airfields were imaged during the reporting period. Disruptive
paint schemes were observed at Rasheed Airfield in Iraq. Continued dispersal of Iranian helicopters in the
Tehran area was also observed. Additionally, a Rapier SAM system was newly deployed at one of major
airfields in Tehran.
5. (S/D) One Iraqi and two Iranian naval facilities were imaged.
6. (S/D) Eleven Iraqi and five Iranian POL-related facilities were imaged. New damage was ob-
served at one Iraqi facility.
7. (S/D) Related activity included the identification of captured Iranian equipment in Baghdad,
Iraq, and continued construction of metal screens and earthen berms at the Baghdad Nuclear Research
Center. In addition, a ship with military deck cargo, possibly destined for Iraq, was seen in South Yemen.

Khorramshahr/Abadan Area
8. (S/D) The area occupied by Ira i forces east of the Karun River and north of Abadan on~
was obscurred by heavy haze on ~(Figure 2). On the west bank of the Shatt Al Arab in
Iraq, four FA batteries and two AA batteries were deployed 7 nm northwest of Abadan between
Additionally, one FA battery and two AA batteries were newly deployed 10 nm northwest of
Abadan during the same time period. One FA battery and one FA battalion remained deployed 4 nm
southwest and 12 nm west of Abadan, respectively, on The area in which Iraqi forces were
previously observed north of Khorramshahr was not imaged.
9. (S/D) The only Iranian forces/equipment observed through haze in the Abadan area consisted of
seven occupied ZU-23 AA positions deployed around Abadan International Airfield on
10. (S/D) Iraqi and Iranian force deployments west and southwest of the city of Ahvaz were either
cloud covered or not imaged on Figure 3).
I I. (S/D) Northwest of Ahvaz, elements of two Iranian 175mm SPG batteries were deployed 3 nm
northwest of Hamideyeh Barracks and Brigade Headquarters Dash and Emishan on F
these guns were not present on Two field logistics supply points were observed, one 3
nm northeast and one 3 nm southeast o t e barracks area. The northeastern supply point consisted of
numerous small tents and vehicles dispersed throughout shallow ravines. The southeastern supply point
contained six shallow revetments and five small, newly constructed, earth-covered bunkers in the side of a
ridge. Numerous stacks of crates were present.
I Elements of the armor brigade housed at Hamideyeh Barracks remained out of garrison
on Seventeen tanks and at least 58 APC were dispersed throughout the installation.
13. (S/D) In Ahvaz, defensive trenches had been dug around at least two separate areas in the center
of' the city since the beginning of hostilities. The ZSU-57/2 SPAA battery deployed just north of the city
on F__1 was no longer present. Additionally, a battery of ZU-23 AA was deployed around the

17. (S/D) Iranian forces deployed within 8 nm northwest and 5 nm west of Dezful on
consisted of three tank companies, one SP gun battery, and one FA battery. A probable CP consisting of
numerous trucks and tents, as well as numerous net- and canvas-covered vehicles/equipment, remained in
ravines immediately northwest of the city. Also, a probable mobile AD unit was still just west of Dezful.
An additional Iranian tank force of at least battalion size (possibly elements of a brigade), a mechanized
infantry company, and numerous support vehicles remained positioned 10 nm north of Dezful. West of
this unit and 13.5 nm northwest of Dezful, the field logistics depot identified on E:77 remained.
