(S/D) This report updates the most recent' in a series of imagery-derived reports on the Iraq/Iran conflict and covers the period This report discusses deployed ground forces in the forward area, rear garrison units (Figure 1), airfields, naval bases, commerical shipping, POL facilities, and related activity in South Yemen. Military unit designators and subordination (where used) are derived from collateral sources.2 Acronyms and abbreviations are defined in a glossary at the end of the report. Additional reports will be issued as the situation changes. 2. (S/D) Imagery of the forward areas of conflict during the reporting period showed the Iranian forces still in control of Abadan, Ahvaz, Dezful, and Pol-E Zahab. Iraqi and Iranian positions in these areas remained relatively unchanged. 3. (S/D) Four Iraqi and three Iranian rear area garrisons/facilities were imaged during the reporting period. The Iraqi 8th Mechanized Infantry Brigade remained out of garrison, and a tank company and 100 APC departed another installation in the Baghdad area. Major elements of the three brigades in the Iranian 77th Infantry Division stationed in northeastern Iran had departed their respective garrisons byC Also, evidence of a possible callup of civilians for military duty and/or the possible requisition of civilian vehicles for military functions was observed in three areas of Iran. 4. (S/D) Four Iraqi and 15 Iranian airfields were imaged during the reporting period. Disruptive paint schemes were observed at Rasheed Airfield in Iraq. Continued dispersal of Iranian helicopters in the Tehran area was also observed. Additionally, a Rapier SAM system was newly deployed at one of major airfields in Tehran. 5. (S/D) One Iraqi and two Iranian naval facilities were imaged. 6. (S/D) Eleven Iraqi and five Iranian POL-related facilities were imaged. New damage was ob- served at one Iraqi facility. 7. (S/D) Related activity included the identification of captured Iranian equipment in Baghdad, Iraq, and continued construction of metal screens and earthen berms at the Baghdad Nuclear Research Center. In addition, a ship with military deck cargo, possibly destined for Iraq, was seen in South Yemen. GROUND FORCE ACTIVITY Iraq/Iran Forward Areas Khorramshahr/Abadan Area 8. (S/D) The area occupied by Ira i forces east of the Karun River and north of Abadan on~ was obscurred by heavy haze on ~(Figure 2). On the west bank of the Shatt Al Arab in Iraq, four FA batteries and two AA batteries were deployed 7 nm northwest of Abadan between Additionally, one FA battery and two AA batteries were newly deployed 10 nm northwest of Abadan during the same time period. (S/D) The only Iranian forces/equipment observed through haze in the Abadan area consisted of seven occupied ZU-23 AA positions deployed around Abadan International Airfield on 10. (S/D) Iraqi and Iranian force deployments west and southwest of the city of Ahvaz were either cloud covered or not imaged on Figure 3). I I. A probable CP consisting of numerous trucks and tents, as well as numerous net- and canvas-covered vehicles/equipment, remained in ravines immediately northwest of the city. Also, a probable mobile AD unit was still just west of Dezful. An additional Iranian tank force of at least battalion size (possibly elements of a brigade), a mechanized infantry company, and numerous support vehicles remained positioned 10 nm north of Dezful. West of this unit and 13.5 nm northwest of Dezful, the field logistics depot identified on E:77 remained. 18. (S/D) Equipment present in Dezful Barracks and Brigade Headquarters appeared to be unchanged from 19. (S/D) Heavy damage was observed in one block of a residential area in Dezful on (Figure 5). A large crater, numerous destroyed houses, and a large amount of debris were evident. This damage was not present on_E_ ] Press reports indicate that FROG-7 rockets have been launched against Dezful as recently as Qasr-E Shirin Area 20. (S/D) Elements of an Iraqi mechanized infantry brigade supported by four artillery battalions and one SA-6 battalion remained approximately 3 nm west and northwest of Pol-E Zahab on (Figure 6). Opposing Iranian forces in the vicinity consisted of one tank company. 21. (S/D) A second Iraqi force was in a valley approximately 4 nm southeast of Qasr-E Shirin. This force consisted of one tank battalion, two tank companies, and a mechanized infantry platoon supported by one SA-6 battalion. An Iraqi FA battalion remained deployed along a valley road leading southeast to Gilan-E Gharb, approximately 17 nm southeast of Qasr-E Shirin. 22. (S/D) Iranian forces remained deployed in a valley adjacent to the one occupied by Iraqi forces. This Iranian force consisted of one tank company in an area 7 nm east-southeast of Pol-E Zahab. Also two tank platoons were deployed approximately 9 nm southeast of the city. An M 107 SP gun battery was on a ridgeline overlooking the valley 8 nm east-southeast of Pol-E Zahab. 23. (S/D) Sar-E Pol-E Zahab Barracks and Brigade Headquarters and Depot immediately south of the deployed forces around Pol-E Zahab, was observed on Elements of a mechanized infantry company (14 APC), an armored cavalry squadron (eight Scorpion tanks and six APC), and elements of a 155mm M109 SP gun battery (two guns) departed from this facility between E (Elements of two tank battalions, 38 tanks: and two artillery battalions, nine 155mm M 109 SP guns and ten 105mm FA guns, have been out of garrison since Forty tanks and 65 AP("~ remained in garrison. (S D) Major elements of two infantry battalions departed Bo'nurd Barracks and Brigade Head- quarters Thirteen trucks and 10 support vehicles were in convoy formation in the barracks area. A high level of personnel activity was evident in the artillery battalion area. Only nine FA guns and approximately 150 trucks remained in garrison. A mobile communications site was set up in the infantry battalion area. 31. (S/D) Major elements of the infantry brigade at Mashhad Barracks Storage Depot Division and Brigade Headquarters were out of garrison on previous imagery of and remained absent on 32. (S/D) Evidence of the possible callup of civilians for military duty and/or the possible requisi- tion of civilian vehicles for military functions was observed in three areas in Iran on 33. (S/D) A convey of approximately 125 sedans was forming_ in an open field adjacent to Tehran Barracks and Ordnance Depot Abbasabad (Figure 7). 34. (S/D) Two buses and numerous personnel in formation were on the parade field at Quchan Barracks and Brigade Headquarters in northeastern Iran on Twenty-six civilian sedans were parked along a road inside the installation. 35. (S/D) Approximately 350 trucks were parked around a soccer field near a hotel, approximately 3 nm northeast of Bandar Abbas Port Facilities Suru in southeastern Iran on (Figure 8). A line of people was assembled at a possible registration point near the hotel. 36. (S/D) No significant new damage was observed at any of the Iraqi or Iranian airfields; however, the runways remained blocked at five of the Iranian airfields (Figure 9 and Table 1). Iraq 37. (S/D) Two Sumner DDG and one LCU arrived at Bandar Abbas Port Facilities Suru and two La Combattante-IIB PTG (Kamen), two Wellington PACV, and one Kangan AWK departed from the port between (The Kangan AWK was observed in the Gulf, south of the harbor.) One PGM-71 PGM and one LCU had subsequently departed by one PGM-71 PGM, one LCU, and one Kangan AWK had returned to port. V essels in port on included one Battle DDG, two Sumner DDG, two Vosper MK-5 FFG (SAAM), two PGM-71 PGM, six MK-III PB, four PBR, one Hengham LST, three LCU, one Bandar Abbas AORL, one Kangan AWK, one Michaelangelo APB, one Amphion AR, and one ARD-T. 44. (SAD) In addition to the reported naval activity, commerical ship activity was also observed at this port. Twelve merchant ships were in port, while two tankers and one merchant ship were in a holding area in the Gulf, south of the harbor, on one merchant ship which had been observed in the holding area entered the port. (S/D) The Shatt Al Arab from 30-24-ION 048-10-30E to 30-18-OON 048-18-40E, including Aba- dan Port Facilities, Iran was imaged on 0 Two freighters, two tankers, 23 coastal/small freighters, and three ARD-D were either at the port facility, in midriver, or aground. 46. (S/D) One coastal/small freighter remained moored at the port facility. No additional battle damage was observed on 47. Prior to the war, this facility had nine POL tanks with a total storage capacity of approximately 1,038,000 barrels. Three POL tanks with a total storage capacity of approximately 336,800 barrels have been destroyed. (SAD) At Abadan Petroleum Product Storage and Pumping Station Transfer Iran I, ten POL storage tanks with a capacity of 1,197,500 barrels, in addition to those previously reported, have been destroyed. These tanks were destroyed prior to 0 Total capacity of this facility has now been reduced from the original 14,030,500-barrel storage capacity to no more than 9,660,500 barrels. Seven POL storage tanks were on fire, and pipeline fires were observed in three areas. No further damage was observed at Abadan Petroleum Refinery NIOC onF--~two storage tanks continued to burn. Iraq 53. (SAD) In Baghdad, an assortment of at least 80 pieces of captured Iranian equipment was observed on (Figure 14). This equipment included M-60 tanks: M-113, BTR-60, and BMP APC: M 109 SP guns: and possible M-42 SPAA and M-548 ammunition carriers. This equipment was observed on partial coverage in a parking lot on the northwest side of a staduim at 33-19-36N 044-26-10E. 55. (S/D) The Soviet Skulptor Konenkov-class ro-ro ship, Agostino Neto, remained anchored in the outer harbor at Aden Port Facilities South Yemen, on 0(Figure 15). It arrived in Aden between Deck cargo included three TWIN PLATE (R-410) troposcatter sets, six ONE EYE/TWO SPOT radar sets, and 64 additional trucks. This unusually long stay in Aden may indicate that the ship was destined for Iraq and is now awaiting new orders. 57. (S/D) Two Soviet arms carriers which departed Umm Qasr Port Facilities when the fighting broke out were also anchored in Aden.
