COMMERCIAL SHIPPING Shatt Al Arab 27. (S/D) The Shatt Al Arab including Abadan Port Facilities, Iran I along the river from 25X1 30-20-25N 048-11-25F to 30-13-35N 048-22-25E, was imaged on Twenty-two coastal/small 25X1 freighters and two ARD-D were either at the port facility or in midriver. 28. (S/D) One coastal/small freighter was moored at the port facility. One transit shed had sustained additional battle damage which may have occurred as early as 0 25X1 29. (S/D) Four coastal/small freighters were DIW I nm southeast of Abadan Port Facilities; two others were riding low in the water; and one was submerged with only the derricks extending above the water. This submerged vessel did not appear to be blocking the channel. 30. (S/D) One coastal/small freighter was DIW and partially submerged I nm northwest of Abadan Port Facilities. This vessel did not appear to be blocking the channel. POL FACILITIES 31. (S/D) Prior to the war, Abadan Petroleum Refinery NIOC contained 241 POL 25X1 storage tanks with a capacity of 16 million barrels. Twelve tanks, with a total capacity of 780,000 barrels, have been destroyed to date. In addition, three small special-purpose tanks and one vertical tank have been de- stroyed. Nineteen vertical tanks and segments of pipelines have been damaged. 32. (S/D) At Abadan Petroleum Product Storage and Pumping Station Transfer Iran I 25X1 Figure 5) there were 140 tanks with a storage capacity of 14,030,500 barrels prior to Thirty-six 25X1 tanks with a total capacity of 3,172,500 barrels have been destroyed to date (20 shown on graphics). Six tanks with a total capacity of 777,500 barrels and portions of pipelines in the facility have been damaged. It is possible that additional damage has been done at the facility and was obscured by smoke. 33. (S/D) Two major Iranian oil pipeline clusters had been severed near Abadan by Some of 25X1 the Abadan-to-Ahvaz pipelines were burning in one and probably two places (heavy smoke was emanating from an area just off of the imagery) and leaking oil in 20 other locations. The northernmost Abadan-to-Bandar-E Mashur pipeline had not been severed. However, since this pipeline is an eastern-running continuation of the Abadan-to-Ahvaz pipeline (which has been severed), this pipeline segment was probably out of operation. The southernmost Abadan-to-Bandar-E Mashur pipeline was burning in one place and leaking oil in six places. There does not appear to have been a systematic effort in severing the entire clusters of pipelines. 34. (S/D) No new damage was observed to Jazireh Ye Khark Petroleum Facilities 25X1 Before the hostilities began, this facility contained 45 POL storage tanks with a total capacity of 25X1 approximately 26,024,000 barrels. To date, two tanks with a total capacity of 544,000 barrels have been destroyed and one 272,000-barrel capacity tank has been damaged. 35. (S/D) Coverage of Tehran Petroleum Storage NIOC revealed no 25X1 battle damage. 36. (S D) The four guyed towers at Abadan Radio Relay Station were destroyed 25X1 between (Figures 6 and 7). This radio station is immediately north of Abadan and adjacent to 25X1 the Abadan-to-Ahvaz oil pipeline. An Iraqi Tank brigade has been in this area since 0 25X1 37. (S/D) One CH-47, two RH-53, and four AB-214 helicopters were at Bandar-E Khomeni Chemical Fertilizer Complex No additional damage appears to have occurred at this 25X1 facility since (one spherical storage tank and at least seven buildings had previously sustained 25X1 damage). 38. (S/D) Approximately 35 people were observed in front of and just north of the main entrance to the Consulate building at the American Consulate Tabriz An additional three 25X1 people were on the Consulate athletic field.
