DEPLOYED VEHICLE DECONTAMINATION STATION AT
SHINDAND, AFGHANISTAN (S)
I. (TSR) A deplored vehicle decontamination station was ohserred for the first time at
Shindand, Afghanistan, on imagery of'
station, on the east edge of Shindand Deployment Area
(Figure I). The vehicle decontamination
consisted of two I MS-
65 decontamination vehicles with tank trailers, five ARS-12 decontamination vehicles, and tvso
BRIM-RKII reconaissance vehicles. Although it is not possible to determine from imagers sshether
this station is in fact being used for decontaminating vehicles or is only for training. the configuration is
consistent vvith operational deplo} ment.
2. ('1SR) The two TMS-65 decontamination vehicles v.cre deplored on either side of a
vehicle path and were offset from each other. The spray noziles vxcre facing the path, enabling
both sides of a vehicle driven along the path to he decontaminated. A tank trailer ""as adjacent to
each T-MS-65. four of the ARS-12s were deployed in a roar perpendicular to the vehicle path. the
two BRDM-RK}is and an ARS-12 ~tiere deplored at the head of' the vehicle path, prohahlr
marking the entrance to the station. Additional related equipment near the station included three
BRDM-RKHs, one ARS-12, four cargo trucks, and two trailers.
3. (TSR) Most of the equipment for the vehicle decontamination station vvas in the chemical
defense battalion's bivouac area on hmtie'er, two BRDM-RKHs. four cargo trucks.
two trailers, and a tank truck ','.ere near the decontamination station oil that dar.
4. (S/D) Shindand Deployment Area is in vrestern Afghanistan, 125 nautical miles (11m)
south of' the Soviet-Afghan border and 75 rim east of the Iranian-Afghan border. It contains a
chemical defense battalion and major elements of a Soviet motorised rifle division and is a major
Soviet supple base.
