SUBJECT: Request for File Check
1. This memorandum requests a file check in aid of a study that is bein
conducted by the DCI's Science and Technology Advisory Panel (STAP).
2. At the DCI's request, STAP is preparing a report on technological
surprise, with special emphasis on identification of areas where potentially
harmful surprises may occur in the next ten years. Part of the study's
methodology consists of visits by STAP members to selected key scientists
around the country. The visits will involve interviews (one to two hours) of
those scientists to acquire their views on likely advances and their
implications. (uiven the STAP members' backgrounds, these sessions will be
somewhat akin to peer discussions.} A total of 25-30 interviews is envisioned
(about three per member). an Agency annuitant and former
member of the Senior Review Panel, w~ accompany the members. Persons being
interviewed will be told in advance that the effort is in support of the DCI.
3. Attached for your review is a list of potential interviewees. Before
proceeding to schedule visits with them, it is desirable to ascertain whether
a meeting would be inadvisable on security or operational grounds. It is
requested, therefore, that your fijP~hecked to determine if any
objections to an interview exist.
