Patrick J. Leahy (D., VT) was briefed on Wednesday, 28 November on the IG Report, at his request, by D/IG STAT Sen. Leahy asked numerous probing questions about the STAT report and the reaction of officers who were reprimanded. He also expressed, almost as an afterthought, an interest in the possibility of there being another IG Re ort on Central America predating this one Sen. Leahy indicated STAT that he still has not made up his mind as to whether he will attempt to become Vice Chairman of SSCI but Hill comment supports the merits of his succeeding the recently defeated Sen. Walter D. Huddleston (D., KY) as Ranking Minority Member of the Agriculture Committee instead. Sen. Dave Durenberger's (IR., MN) public comment (Washington Post, 30 Nov) about his imminent selection as Chairman of the SSCI is widely characterized on the Hill as "premature and injudicious." The Quayle Committee recommendation for changing SSCI membership from eight to ten years makes it even more likely that Sen. John H. Chafee (R., RI) will become Chairman instead of Durenberger. It is understood that Sen. Chafee is "chafed" by the Durenberger announcement and we should learn shortly via press or Hill rumor as to his intentions. SSCI staffers expect a Senate leadership decision on the the SSCI Chairmanship by 7 December. House On 29 November Rep. Douglas K. Bereuter (R., NE) was briefed by DI analysts on Central America prior to his appearance on CBS Morning News on 4 December. On 30 November we learned that ABC has taped a total of nine hours of interviews with former FDN leader Edgar Chamorro. Chamorro reportedly alledged in considerable detail that his CIA contacts briefed him on how to lobby and manipulate Congress, likewise confiding the Agency's real purpose of overthrowing the Sandinista government. Speculation has it that the tapes will be made public by ABC sometime following the Director's meeting with the HPSCI Committee on 4 December, at which time other leaks are also not unlikely.
