1. Military Plant No. 62 in Chelyabinsk was situated near the alcohol distillery.
A formed granary, it had been converted into'a military plant during World
War II. The plant operated in three shifts, but no details were available
on its production items or its labor force. Lar'q,quantities of coal were
brought to the giant in trucks, and the plarlt..s numerous chimney stacks would
emit a black smoke. The plant was surrounded by a brick wall, approximately
3.1+ meters high.
2. The municipal power station (Gorodskaya TETS) was constantly being enlarged.
In 19136 the eighth stack was erected. A new power station was constructed
in Krasnosolsk 5ic7, which was located 60 km from Chelyabinsk. The
station occupied a six-story building and, according to rumor, supplied
Chelyabinsk with electric power for industrial purposes.
3. A new industrial area had been under construction 10-15 km north of
Chelyabinsk since the early postwar years. It was named Bakal and the
construction undertaken there was called BAKALSTROY. The area's main
plant was a metal works. Second in size was a factory which produced
prefabricated houses of reinforced concrete; these houses made up part
of the living accommodations for the development area. According to plan,
24 (14chtovyy yashchik No. 24) and had an artillery shell factory
zone, access to which was under strict control. The zone allegedly had R B-_.

4. I liron ore deposits were discovered to the north of
Bakal, in the vicinity of hhe road to Sverdlovsk. A special railroad spur
was laid from the mines to the metal works at Bakal, where the ore was
processed. 50X1-HUM
5. During the war there had been an ordnance factory at Bakal which was transferre
to Kyshtym in 191+8-19149. all the 'workers were transferred
along with the factory. Since 1950-1951, Kyshtym had reportedly been a closed
the area was eventually to equal the size of Chelyabinsk.
