1. Sibiu has been a district capitol since 1954.9 about the time that Sibiu
province was abolished and the city transferred to the Stalin province.
It has some 120.,000 residents (as compared with 50.9000 before World War II)
of whom a large number are Germans and Hungarians. This growth is attri

the municipal water., sewerage and gas services,
d. The city party committee - in a two-story structure 20 by 10 meters in
size., on the left-hand side of Strada Tribunei going from Strada 1 Mai
to Strada Stalin; formerly a private residence*
e. The district trade union council - in a one-story building., 8 by 1,5

f. Militia and Securitate headquarters - in an area enclosed by the road
leading to Poplaca, Strada Gheorghe Cosbus, Strada Dr. Ion Ratiu and
another small street parallel to Strada Dr. Ion Ratiu. The two entrances
to the building are from the road leading to.Poplaca and Strada Gheorghe
Cosbuc.
g. An additional Militia unit using police dogs, is stationed in the
Dumbrava forest.
h. The city and district law courts, the prosecution office and the military
court - in the old law court building.
i. Prison - at its prewar location in a two-story building next to the law
courts. Its inmates are both criminal and political offenders; the cells
of the latter are on the second floor.
J* Telephone exchange {built during 1948-1949) - in a two-story building on
the right-hand side.of Strada Stalin, going towards Piata Republicei.
The groundfloor contains nine booths for interurban calls and two for
local calls.
k. Central post and telegraph office - in their prewar location, a one-story
building on Strada 1 Mal.
1. Amplifier station - on the groundfloor of the former "Prima Ardeleana"
insurance company building.
in. State bank - in a one-story building on Strada 1 Mai, opposite the
central post office*
n. Investment bank - in the building of the former National Bank on Strada
Jdanov, corner of Strada Molotov.
o. Savings bank (CEC) - between Strada Tribunei and Parcul 1 Mai, in a
three-story building., 20 by 30 meters in size.
3. The following are locations of military objectives in Sibiu:
a. Fire brigade - in the former prison building, on Strada Sarii, opposite
the synagogue. It has five or six modern fire engines.
b. An additional fire brigade unit is stationed in the former income tax
office building, at the beginning and on the right-hand side of Strada
Malinovski, coming from the center of town.
co The military commissariat - opposite the law court, in a building which
formerly belonged to the Orthodox church,
d. Military hospital - on the right-hand side of the road leading to Poplaca
going towards the center of town; a two-story building, some 100 meters
long*
e. Officersf school - occupies,a large area south of the town, between the
roads leading to Poplaca and Dumbrava.".
f. Military workshops and annoy'- On the right-hand side of the road
leading to Poplaca, coming from the center of town.

g. Large barracks - located on both sides of Strada Malinovski (no details
on units stationed there)*
h. Militia barracks (formerly Cazerna 90) - at the intersection of Strada
Malinovski with the road to Dumbrava*
i. Military airfield - to the left of the road to Alba Julia, coming from
the center of town, behind the Puisor quarter. To the right of the
road, new buildings were erected during the past few years.
j. Military barracks - in the center of Sibiu, along a small street
branching off Strada Stalin.
1i.. Medical institutions in Sibiu are located as follows:
a. Hospital for mental diseases - in the northern part of town, north of
the railroad tracks and behind the railway bridge over the Cibin River,
in the direction of Sura Mca and Apo.dul De Suse
b. The general state hospital which includes maternity, children's and
tuberculosis wards and consists of seven one and two-story buildings -
between Nblotov, Moscovei and Jdanov streets. The blood bank and
central dispensary, built in 1958, are also located within the hospital
area*
c. A hospital for venereal diseases and a children's hospital occupy two
wings of a building located in Parcul 1 Mai.

a. The former National Theater was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1956-57
under the name Teatrul Independenta. It has some 900 seats*
b. The central library and the Stefan Gheorghiu House of Culture are
located in Parcul 1 Mai, next to the hospital for children and venereal
diseases.
c. The Pacea cinema (formerly Corso), with 500 to 600 seats, is situated
on Strada I.V. Stalin*
d. A cinema (name unknown) with some 1100 seats is located on Strada
Tribunei, next to the CEC bank, on the premises of the former German
Clubs
e. The Arta cinema (a former military cinema), with some 800 seats, is
located on the left-hand side of Strada Faurului, coming from Strada
Ocneie
f. The Flamura Rosie cinema, built in 1957, with 700 seats, is located be-
tween Strada Lunga and the road leading to Alba Iuliae
g. The former Roemischer Kaiser Hotel is today called Paltinis.
h. The Bulevardul Hotel is located in Parcul i Mai, at the corner of the
road leading to Alba Iulia, in a three-story building. Its groundfloor
contains a large restaurant.

6. The following are locations of industrial enterprises in Sibiu:
a. The"Tndependenta"metal products factory - on the right bank of the Cibin
River, on both sides of Strada Ocnei. It employs some 3,000 workers, in
three shifts.
b". The"Balanta"scales and measuring instruments plant, employing some 1,000
workers in three shifts - north of the road leading to the village of
Cornatele
c. The"Flamura Rosie"plastics (celluloid and bakelite) factory, established
in 1957 and employing some 1,000 workers in three shifts - opposite the
Balanta factorye
d. A hosiery factory (formerly Recap present name unknown)- between the
road to Alba Iulia.and Strada Lunga. It employs about 700 workers in
three shifts..
e. The"Amidon"starch and amidone factory ?- between Strada Abatorului and
the railway line. It employs approximately 800 workers*
f. The "Libertatea" textile plant, employing some 1,000 workers in three
shifts - next to the "Amidon" factory, on the right bank of the Cibin
River*
g. The "Sibiana" cheese factory (former Lica) - at the corner of Strada
Nicolae Teclu and Strada Abatoruluj.
h. A wafer factory (Fabrica De Napolitane) - before the "Sibiana" factory,
on the left-hand side of Strada Nicolae Teclu.
i. A sausage factory - at the southern end and on the right-hand side of
Strada Nbrilor, coming from the road to Alba r?1i",
J. Workshops for materials used in road and bridge construction - north of
the road to Cornatel and east of the road to Gusteritae
k. Tractor repair station (MS) - on both sides and at the end of Strada
Sarii, at the corner of Strada Noscovei.
1.. A large petrol store - next to the workshops mentioned in 6(j), above.
in. Grain stores of the Comcereal enterprise - left of the Cibin River.
One is located on the road to Alba Iulia and the other near the road to
Ocna Sibiului,
no Three central grain silos, with a capacity of 2,500 tons each,. were
erected in 1957 some 300 meters from the railroad tracks and next to the
tracks.
o. Food stores of Prodaliment - on the left-hand side of the road leading
to Alba Iulia, coming from the center of the town, at the corner of
Morarilor Street.
7? An antenna farm and some unidentified structures are located left of the
Cibin River, between the road to Alba lulia and Strada Lunga. It is be-
lieved to be either a broadcasting or jamming station.

8. The following are details on public utilities in Sibiu:
a. The garage of the "RATA"transport company is located on the right-hand
side of the Alba Julia road and behind the Comcereal warehouses, coming
from the center of town.
b. Sibiu is served by two streetcar lines:
1) One line runs from the central railway station via Strada Molotov,,
Strada Stalin and the road to Dumbrava and to the village of
Rasinari.
2) The second line runs from the central railway station via Strada
9 Mai and Strada Faurului to Turnisor village.
c. Sibiu is served by two bus lines:
1) One runs from the small railway station via the road to Stara Mare
and Strada Ocnei to Piata Republicei.
2) The second line connects the village of Gusterita with Piata
.. Republicei.
d. Interurban bus lines to and from Sibiu run on the following routes:
1) Sibiu - Alba Iulia
2) Sibiu - Cisnadie
3) Sibiu - Saliste
4) Sibiu - Sura Mare
e. Sibiu has two railroad stations which are located as follows:
1) The central station, Gara Mare, is located on Piata Garii. It
has 8 to 10 tracks.
2) The small railroad station, Gara Mica, is located at the inter-
. section of the road leading to Sura Mare village.
f. One power station, located between Strada Sarii and the railroad line,
supplies only part of the needs of Sibiu. A larger power station is
located in the village of Raul Saudului. The station supplies current
for street lighting (220 V, AC) and industrial purposes (380 V, AC).
The supply of electric power is regular.
