Legend to Overlay of Rostov-on-Don Area
Va) Zelenyy Island.
An island., located south of the city, which was used by the city
inhabitants as summer recreation area. Small wooden houses were
dispersed within the area of the island no military 50X1-HUM
or industrial installations located on the island.
A wooden bridge connecting the island (Point 1), with the eastern
part of Rostov.

A new road., believed to be hard dirt surfaced, leading from the river
towards a junction with the main road from Rostov to Bataysk. The
location of this road junction was unknown to source. The dotted
line extending from Point (2) towards Point (4) denotes the possible
location of the new road. During summer months
work in process on the island and at Point (4).

This area contained several large
a 50X1-HUM
large number of earth excavating and moving equipment in operation.
It was rumored that in addition to the construction of new runways,
underground hangars or installations were also being built. The new
construction work was in process at this area, and
on the type of aircraft observed. The field had hard packed dirt
runways until 1953 or 1954. During the period 1953-1955, extensive

promenade which was built along this embankment during recent years.
This promenade became a favorite pastime area of the local population.
The activities of the river port could be clearly observed from this
promenade. Many river craft and barges were always anchored at many
places in the port and along the river. Traffic in this area and on
the river was continuous during day time hours.
