APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE,
report on meat packing plans located
in the Belorussian cities of Orsha, Minsk, Gomel, Vitebsk, Mogilev,
Bobruysk, Polotsk, Slutsk, Grodno, and Baranovichi. The report contains
the following plant information: date of operation, amount of meat
processed daily, and employment figures.

1. The meat packing plant in Orsha 5L-312 3U- 45), Wn3.
employed about 700 workers, had the capacity to process 800
tons of meat, including 200 tons of sausage and canned meat,
a day. Most of its output was exported. The plant had a
coal storage plant with a 2,000-ton capacity.
2. The plant in Minsk (N 53-55, E 27-35), which went into partial
operation in 1957, employed about 600 workers, and this figure
was expected to rise to 1,000 by 1960. In 1957 the factory
processed 300 to 350 tons of meat, including 80 tons of
sausage and canned meat, and 40 tons of fowl, a day. The

plant had a cold storage unit with a capacity for 1,200
tons. The plant, most of whose production was exported,
had the following sections: canned meat, sausage, meat
pies, slaughter house, poultry-fattening, and pens for
cattle before slaughter.
The meat packing plant in Gomel (N 52-27, E 30-58), which
had 250 workers, was a prewar enterprise which had been
considerably expanded. In 1957 the plant processed about
20 tons of sausage out of a total of 120 tons of meat a
day.
4. The plant in Vitebsk (N 55-12, E 30-13), which had been
in operation since 1954, had replaced a smaller and older
enterprise. The plant, which had about 300 workers, pro-
cessed 150 tons of meat, including 25 tons of sausage, a
day in 1957.
5. The plant in Mogilev (N 53-55, E 30-21), which had similarly
been in operation since 1954, employed 300 to 350 workers.
In 1957 it processed 150 tons of meat daily, one-fifth of
which was sausage.
6. The meat packing plant in Bobruysk (N 53-11, E 29-14), which
had been in operation since 1952 and employed about 150 workers,
processed an average of 70 tons of meat a day, including 25
tons of sausage, in 1957.

7. The plant in Polotsk (N 55-29, E 28-47), which was an old
enterprise with 100 workers, produced about 40 tons of meat
a day in 1957.
8. The plant in Slutsk (N 53-02, E 27-34), which had been in
operation since 1950 and employed about 80 workers, processed
about 40 tons of meat a day in 1957.
9. The plant in Grodno (N 53-41, E 23-51) was opened in 1950 and
employed about 250 persons.
10. The plant in Brest (N 52-07, E 23-40), a new enterprise em-
ploying about 200 workers, processed about 80 tons of meat
a day in 1957.
11. The plant in Baranovichi (N 53-05, E 26-02), which had been
in operation since 1952 and enployed about 300 workers, pro-
cessed an average of 120 tons of meat a day in 1957. In
1957 its canned poultry section produced an average of 15
to 20 tons daily. Its products were of high quality and
principally for the export market.
12. In 1957 the Belorussian meat packing industry, particularly
the plants in Minsk, Orsha and Baranovichi, produced a monthly
total of 1,200 tons of meat and meat products for export.-
Seventy percent of the exports were shipped to East Germany,
and the remainder to Poland and China.

13. During 1957 7,000 to 8,000 horses were slaughtered in the
Belorussian SSR as part of the policy of reducing the size
of herds in kolkhozy. Part of the horsemeat was processed
into canned meat and sausage and marketin the towns, while
the raw meat was sold to areas inhabited by Khazaks and
Tatars.
