FACTORIES IN THE VARNA AND PROVADIYA AREAS
The 1 May Factory - August 1949
1. The 1 May Machine Repair Shop (formerly the Ivan Tashev Factory) is located at
the north edge of Provadiya (N 143-11, E 27-27), south of the new Provadiya air-
field and opposite the Len Factory. The 1 May Factory is composed of two 1-sorry
buildings. The main building is "L" shaped, with the longer part measuring 30
by 10 meters and the wing measuring 20 by 10 meters. The second building houses
the administration offices and spare parts depot.
2. This factory produces agricultural machinery such as harrows (grapi) Need
cleaners vealki), disinfecting equipment (lotri za obezzarazyavanie), and corn
shellers (ronachki). It manufactures pump motors and spare parts for threshing
machines, reapers, and planting machines, and also repairs all kinds of farm
machinery. The factory has the following sections:
a. Lathe section;

c. Blacksmith shop;
d. Assembly shop;
e. Paint shop; and
f. Carpentry shop.

5? The factory has 200 workers on three shifts. The daily wage is based on a norm.
The average wage is 350-100 lava (old ourrenoy) per day for the workers and 700

7. The factory has a Communist Party organization of about 80 members. The secretary

The Len Spinning Mill - August 1949
8. The Len Spinning Mill is located on the north edge of Provadiya opposite the 1
May Machine Repair Factory. Its eastern boundary is the Vetrino-Provadiya road.
This factory existed prior to 9 September 1944. It is composed of three buildings;
the spinning section is located in a 1-story rfLn shaped building which faces the
street.
9. About 450 women work in the factory in three shifts. The wage is based on a
norm.
The Vasil Kolarov State Machine Building Shop - August 1949
10. The Vasil Kolarov Factory is located in Varna., on the east shore of the lake just
east of the railroad and north of the Koralovag Shipyards. Prior to 9 September
1944, this plant was known as the Cherno More (Black Sea) plant. The factory area
has a concrete wall on the east side and barbed wire on the north and south sides.
The area measures 150-200 meters by 50-80 meters. There are five 1-story build-
ings, one of which is the administration building.
11. The plant has the following sectionsg

120 The Vasil Kolarov Plant manufactures multiple valves, tapered roller bearings,
press bodies (about two tons), tractor heads, truck engine blocks, truck engine -
pistons, tractor engine pistons, cam shafts, bolts and nuts, cog wheels, spare
parts for lathes, and riveting machines. It is rumored that the plan is also to
manufacture diesel engines. In addition to manufacturing the items mentioned, the
plant also repairs all kinds of machinery,
13. Six or seven hundred workers are employed in three shifts per day. The admini-
strative staff consists of 20 persons.

The Korbso Shipyards - August 199 and as Indicated
20. The Korbso Shipbuilding Union in Varna in 1948 consisted of the following ship-
building plants and shops:
a. The Georgi Dimitrov Shipyards located on the seashore about 700 meters south
of the railroad station in Varna; it is in the industrial quarter, south of
the Zora Factory and southwest of the Metal Stove Factory and the Red Star
Factory; the north side and the southwest corner of the plant, are bounded by
a concrete walls while the rest of the area is fenced by barbed wire:
(1) There are four large and several small buildings in this area. The four
large buildings are equal in size. They house the administrations car-
pentry,, lathes and boiler sections.
(2) The plant was manufacturing barges, and in 1948; three barges of 19000
tons each were under construction.
(3) The plant has the following sections: (a) Car entry. (b) Soileri;
with Chesmedzhiev (fnu) in charge. (o)

(14) In 1946 the Plant employed - 3,000 the boiler section worked only one s per day.

e. Neptun State Shipbuilding Enterprise,, which builds small wooden craft and
does all the wood work for Korbso; and
d. Shipbuilding yard for concrete tankers, located on the southeast side of the
intersection of the Varna-Asparukhovo road and the canal; concrete tankers
are built in the open; in the summer of 1951, two concrete tankers 50-60 meters
long were under construction; it was rumored that Soviets were employed at
this yard as administrative workers.
GRAIN STORAGE AT GARA SINDEL
Grain Storage at Gara Sindel, Provadiya Okoliya - 15 November 1952
21. There are five State grain storehouses at Gara Sindel (N 43-06, E 27-39), where
grain collected by RKS (Regional Cooperative Union) of Provadiya is stored, It
takes the quotas from the villages of Trustikovo,p Sindel, Sultantsi, and
Dubravina,, Provadiya Okoliya, and Yunak, Kazashka Reka, and Momino, Varna Okoliya.
22. The first grain storehouse is located approximately 100 meters north of the rail-
road station of Sindel and adjacent to the railroad track, where it has a loading
ramp. The storehouse is a 1-story building, about 140 by 20 by four meters in
size, and is used chiefly for storing wheat.
23. The second storehouse, used for storing corn, is located 50 meters northwest of
the Sindel station and 60 meters southwest of the first storehouse. It is a 1-
story building about 30 by 15 by four meters in size. There is a building. used
as a dryer located beside this building,
24. The third storehouse is located 10 meters south of the second and 30 meters
northwest of the railroad station. It is a 1-story building apprcximately 30 by
20 by four meters in size and is used for storing wheat and barley.
25. The fourth storehouse$ used for seeds for oats, sunflowers, flax, hemp, and hay
crops, is located 70 meters south of the railroad station and adJoining the
village council building. This building is one story high and measures about
20 by 12 by 10 meters.
26. The fifth storehouse is located 70 meters east of the fourth and 20 meters east
of the railroad track, It is a 1--story building, former1 a mill, and measures
