In mid-1951 the Party Cenral Committee ordered all publishing houses to publish only "essential", i.e. political, works. 2a The following publishing houses commission writers to do works a. Editura de Stat (State Publishing House). The managing editor is a Hungarian named Aszodi. ba Confederatia Generalia a Muncii (CG M - General Confederation of Labor) Publishing House. The xnnaging editor is Corneliu Sabin (formerly Sabetay). Editur* de Stat Pentru Literatura si Arta (ESPLA - State Publishing House for Literature and Art). The managing editor is Lazarescu. Before stabilisation, advances of about 20,000 lei monthly were paid to writers working on commissions. Then advances were stopped, and since that time writers have been in financial difficulties. Salaried employees of publishing houses, such as translators, are being paid at the rate of one new lei for 200 to 400 old lei (instead of 20 old lei), and so their pay is now negligible. All authors belong to a,special cooperative, located at 56 Strada Romana, where they can buy clothing and scarce foodstuffs at favorable prices. All vritings have to be censored twice before publication, first by the Central Committee and then by the State Publishing House.. As a result it is sometimes two years before a? book appears in prin..
