HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS
Arthur Levitt, Jr.
DOCTOR OF LAWS
Arthur Levitt Jr. is a man who believes that it is far more enriching
to have several careers in life than merely one. He has done just this.
Before starting his illustrious career on Wall Street, he was a journalist, an
advertising and promotion executive, and a cattle rancher.
The son of the late Arthur Levitt, New York State Controller, he was
born in Brooklyn, New York, attended Poly Prep Country Day School and
now serves as chairman of its board. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa
from Williams College, he became a reporter for The Berkshire Eagle
which he left to join Time, Inc. as an assistant promotion director. In
1959 he moved west to Kansas City and Oppenheimer Industries, a com-
pany in the ranchland and cattle-raising business, where he rose to the
position of vice president in charge of its eastern operations.
Early in, the sixties, he returned eastward to the canyons of Wall Street
and joined what was then a small research-oriented institutional brokerage
firm. He became its president and under his leadership, Shearson Hayden
Stone, Inc. grew into one of the largest firms in the brokerage and invest-
ment banking business.
Three years ago, he was asked to assume the leadership of the
American Stock Exchange. Since then, as a result of his stimulating leader-
ship and dedication, the Exchange has prospered and grown. He has earned
a. reputation as the champion of the individual investor and the small
businessman and has travelled thousands of miles across the country each
year to address all types of business and community groups in his successful
efforts to bring Main Street back to Wall Street.
An avid conservationist and member of The Sierra Club, his vacations
include hiking, camping, riding the rapids or scaling mountain peaks.
Long interested in the world of art, he is a member of the New York
State Council on the Arts. Despite his commitment to his work and his
varied outside interests he cherishes hours at home with his wife, Marylin
and their two children.
In admiration of the many and varied accomplishments of this man
for all seasons, Pace University is happy and proud to confer upon Arthur
Levitt, Jr. the degree Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, with all the rights
and privileges pertaining thereunto.

HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS
Harry B. Helmsley
DOCTOR OF COMMERCIAL SCIENCE
To witness the accomplishments of Harry B. Helmsley, one need only
look at the familiar skyline of New York City.
As president and chief executive of Helmsley-Spear, Inc. he is one of
the nation's largest and most diverse real-estate entrepreneurs. He has
built or managed hundreds of properties in this city, including office
buildings, apartment houses, and hotels. Among them are such landmarks
as the Empire State Building, One Penn Plaza, Parkchester, Fresh Meadows,
the Park Lane, the Carlton House and the St. Moritz.
In addition, he is responsible for numerous other properties across
the nation in such cities as Detroit, Chicago, Washington, D. C., Houston,
San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In a successful career which has spanned over half a century he has
learned to achieve his business goals in many ways, whether converting an
apartment into a condominium or funding a use for an empty building or
in building the newest hotel in New York.
Born in New York City, he came from a modest Quaker family and
graduated from Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. He entered the
real estate business as a sixteen year old office boy and began his climb
to the pinnacle of his field, where he now has the good fortune to be able
to share both his work and his home life with his vivacious wife, Leona.
His zest for the work that he loves and the breadth of the holdings
that he manages have impressed his colleagues and resulted in the naming
of 230 Park Avenue in New York City as the Helmsley Building.
Pace University views the career and the accomplishments of Harry
Helmsley with awe and admiration, and in conferring upon him the degree
of Doctor of Commercial Science, honoris causa, honors both the Univer-
sity and the occasion at which it is bestowed.

HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS
Felice N. Schwartz
DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS
Felice N. Schwartz, whom we honor today, is truly a modern American
pioneer. She has spent many years using her talents in extending the frontiers
of human rights to seek and obtain equal opportunities for women.
In the "Who's Who of American Women", she is listed modestly as
a sociologist. In reality, the women in American industry owe her a
tremendous debt.
Since its founding almost two decades ago, she has been president of
Catalyst and provided expert guidance for this highly-acclaimed nonprofit
counseling organization for women. In her position of leadership, she has
played an important role in obtaining hard-won rights of equal opportunity
and treatment for women at work, on the assembly line or in the corporate
suite.
Under her direction, one of Catalyst's particularly significant achieve-
ments has been to encourage women in their middle years to prepare
themselves for reentry into the corporate world and to contribute their
talents to the achievement of organizational goals.
A graduate of Smith College with a Bachelors of Arts degree, she
has always valued her education and sought to provide meaningful educa-
tional opportunities for other women through programs at Catalyst.
A native New Yorker who still lives in this city,' she, as a wife and
mother of three children, has demonstrated that a woman may enjoy the
rewards of both a satisfying career and a loving family.
For her impressive achievements in equal rights, and for her perse-
verance in pursuing the goal of equity in human relationships, Pace
University takes deep pride in conferring upon Felice N. Schwartz the
degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all the rights
and privileges pertaining thereunto.

HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS
In honoring Stanfield Turner today we are recognizing a Rhodes
Scholar who served with bravery and distinction in the United States Navy,
advanced to the rank of Admiral, and for the past three years has held
the challenging position of Director of the Central Intelligence Agency of
the United States.
A United States Senator has described him as "an uncommon admiral,
a philosopher and a thinker". He is all this and more. His interests range
from philosophy, theater, opera and economics to international politics
and military affairs.
Born in Highland Park near Chicago, he was a student of the world
about him even in his high school days. He attended Amherst College and
the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated near the top of his class
and still found time to earn a berth on the football team. Following gradua-
tion, he was named a Rhodes Scholar and studied philosophy, politics and
economics and received a Masters degree in the arts from Oxford.
An impressive naval record during the Korean and Vietnam wars
resulted in his promotion to the rank of Admiral and a Bronze Star for
his gallantry in combat.
Subsequently, he was named President of the Naval War College at
Newport, Rhode Island where he won national acclaim for his imaginative
reforms of the curriculum. With courage and creativity, he instituted new
programs of study, invited idealogically diverse civilian experts to lecture
at the College, and encouraged his officer-students to study everything from
Thucydides to the Cuban missile crisis.
His appointment as Commander-in-Chief of NATO forces in Southern
Europe gave him further opportunity to demonstrate his extraordinary
abilities as a military officer with a highly developed social conscience.
In admiration for Admiral Turner's intellectual breadth, his outstanding
accomplishments and his unique skills in leadership, President Carter
selected him for one of the top national security posts in the Administration,
the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Since assuming his current responsibilities, Admiral Turner has con-
tinued to demonstrate his capacity to innovate as well as an energetic
approach to his responsibilities. In doing so, he has inspired respect and
commitment from his colleagues.
In recognition of the leadership, knowledge, courage, and creativity
which he has demonstrated in his distinguished career of service for his
country, Pace University salutes Stansfield Turner, and gratefully confers
upon him the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, with all the
rights and privileges pertaining thereunto.

HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS
Today the School of Law at Pace University honors Lawrence H.
Cooke, the twentieth Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals
and the first to be appointed, rather than elected, to that office. His many
professional achievements and his inspiring commitment to justice and
judicial reform command our respect and praise.
After graduation from Albany Law School with an LL.B. degree and
being admitted to the New York Bar, he began an impressive career in
the law which has extended over four decades. In addition to a private
practice, he has served as County Judge, Surrogate and Children's Court
Judge, State Supreme Court Justice, Appellate Court Judge, and Appeals
Court Judge. In 1979 he was appointed to the prestigious post of Chief
Justice of the Court of Appeals.
The care and thoughtfulness of his opinions have drawn attention to
public issues of grave concern, particularly his decision which ruled uncon-
stitutional sections of the New York statute on the death penalty, and his
dissent on the constitutionality of a statute authorizing a trial judge to bar
the press and public from pretrial suppression hearings in felony cases.
Not satisfied, however, with the current judicial system in New York,
he favors major reforms, especially the need for a single trial level court,
a unification of court rules, and the establishment of an additional judicial
department.
His philosophy about the field of law can perhaps best be expressed
in his own words describing his present office: "No more sacred duty can
be entrusted to any person than that of leading august members of this
court in their awesome responsibility of rendering justice unto our fellow
citizens."
Pace University recognizes that the weight of that responsibility now
rests on the shoulders of a jurist whose career mirrors his commitment to
the law and the people of New York, and hence it is with unanimous voice
that we confer upon you, Lawrence H. Cooke, the degree of Doctor of
Laws, honoris causa, with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereunto.

PACE ALMA MATER
Alma Mater, hearts and voices sing to thee our everlasting praise;
Each and every heart rejoices at the thought of happy days.
Pace, Oh Pace, we'll ne'er forget you, nor the friends we hold so dear;
Memories will linger ever and will brighten coming years.
Alma Mater, stand forever, love is strong as we go marching by;
So to thee, we raise our voices with your standard held on high.
Pace, Oh Pace, we'll ever follow where thy beacons show the way;
True to thee we'll be forever as we labor day by day.
THE CREED OF AN ALUMNUS
WE BELIEVE that the relationship of the alumnus
with his alma mater begins with the
first day of college and continues ever-
lastingly.
WE BELIEVE that this union of the college and its
alumni must be founded on mutual
respect, service, and support, each one
to the other.
WE BELIEVE that success of the individual is an
accomplishment of the goals of the
college and we, therefore, dedicate
ourselves not only to the advancement
of our personal goals but also those
of our college, and of our fellow
alumni individually and collectively.
