GUEST SPEAkER
VICE ADMIRAL JAMES BOND STOCKDALE, Medal of Honor
winner and President of the Naval War College,
graduated from the United States Naval Academy in
1946. During the next twenty years, he served
successively as a destroyerman, carrier aviator,
landing signal officer, test pilot and instructor,
fighter pilot, graduate student, aircraft squadron
commander, and air wing commander. He led the
initial strikes from a carrier deck in the Tonkin
Gulf against North Vietnam in 1964. Shot down and
captured over a year later during his second combat
tour in Vietnam, he spent most of his seven and
one-half years of imprisonment in solitary confine-
ment. Despite repeated torture and years of
restraint in leg irons and handcuffs he maintained
contact with his fellow Americans by secret means,
setting standards and policy for the prisoners'
organization and united resistance. He is the most
highly decorated officer in the Navy.
SYBIL BAILEY STOCKDALE, the wife of Vice Admiral
Stockdale, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from
Mt. Holyoke College, and a Master of Arts degree

first 18 years of life as a Navy wife, she taught
at several high schools, raised four sons, and
moved 23 times! After her husband became a POW
in North Vietnam in September 1965, Mrs. Stockdale
attained national stature as the founder and
initial Board Chairman of the National League
of Families of American Prisoners and Missing
in Southeast Asia. Throughout the remainder of
the war she met regularly with Dr. Kissinger and
periodically with the President. She also travelled
to Paris for a confrontation with the North Viet-
namese delegation to the Paris Peace talks.
