SECRET Approved For Release 2009/11/18: CIA-RDPO1-00569R000100090054-4 W Central Intelligence Agency W Dr. Charles Sampson Office of the Historian Room 3100, State Annex 1 Department of State 2401 E Street, NW Washington, D.C. 20520 26 July 1984 Dear Dr. Sampson: As you know, I have arranged for the historians working on the Vietnam War volumes of the Foreign Relations of the United States series to screen the documents they order from presidential libraries after we receive them here. Dr. Louis Smith visited our offices and screened documents that he had selected at the John F. Kennedy Library, to identify the specific documents he would like CIA to review and release for this project. After review, the originating components here have given me a decision on the Kennedy Library documents that Dr. Smith screened. Of the 33 documents that Dr. Smith selected for review from this group at hand, I can forward 15 documents for release, while 17 documents have already been forwarded to you (in response to Dr. Keefer's earlier request) under our covering letter of 3 July 1984. We are still awaiting a decision on one more document in Dr. Smith's group. I shall enclose copies of the Kennedy Library manifests that include these documents You will note on these enclosed manifests that we have numbered each document received from the Kennedy Library. Dr. Smith used these numbers (indicated below in the "HS/JFK Document #" column) in screening these documents, and for his information the results of our review are summarized below: Requester Rel./Denied HS/JFK Document # Smith released 44, 47, 48, 49, 50, 54, 55, 56, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 120 previously released 517, 521, 523, 527, 529, 532, 533, 534, 535, 537, 531a, 532a, 622, 635, 655, 656, 657 pending 625 SECRET This letter is UNCLASSIFIED when separated from attache documents.
