A& Approved For Release 2009/11/17: CIA-RDPO1-00569R000100080054-5 Central Intelligence Agency Dr. Charles Sampson Office of the Historian Room 3100, State Annex 1 Department of State 2401 E Street, NW Washington, D.C. 20520 2 March 1984 Dear Dr. Sampson: As you know, I have arranged for the historians working on the Vietnam War volumes of the Foreign Relations of the United States series to screen the documents they order from presidential libraries after we receive them here. Drs. Baehler, Keefer and Landa visited our offices in December and January and screened ten separate groups of documents that they had selected at the John F. Kennedy Library, to identify the specific documents they would like CIA to review and release for this project. After review, the originating components here have given me decisions on two more of the ten groups of Kennedy Library documents that these three historians screened. (We reported on the first three groups in our letter to you of 17 February 1984, and five more groups are still under review.) Of the 27 documents that these historians selected for review from these two groups at hand, I can forward only one classified document for release, since the originating components have denied the other 26 documents. I shall enclose copies of the Kennedy Library manifests that include these documents, divided into two groups as follows: Group F: JFK Manifest Nos. 22-26 Group H: JFK Manifest Nos. 29, 34 You will note on these enclosed manifests that we have numbered each document received from the Kennedy Library. Drs. Baehler, Landa and Keefer used these numbers (indicated below in the "HS/JFK Document #" column) in This letter is UNCLASSIFIED when separated from the appended documents. Approved For Release 2009/11/17: CIA-RDPO1-00569R000100080054-5 Ah Approved For Release 2009/11/17: CIA-RDPO1-00569R000100080054-5 S w screening these documents, and for their information the results of our review are summarized below: Requester Rel./Denied HS/JFK Document # Baehler denied 315-332, 334, 335 Landa released 378 denied 379, 478, 498 Keefer denied 344, 356, 361 We understand that we need not arrange for review of any other documents in these three groups, unless Drs. Baehler, Keefer or Landa (or some other historian working on this project) selects specific additional documents for review. As usual, the caveats noted in the enclosed "CIA Records Access Policy" apply concerning CIA review before any material from CIA-originated documents can be downgraded, declassified or published in any unclassified publication. I am sending a copy of this letter to Ms. Suzanne K. Forbes, Classification Review Archivist at the Kennedy Library, and to Dr. James E. O'Neill, Assistant Archivist for Presidential Libraries at the National Archives and Records Service. With all good wishes, Yours sincerely, J. Kenneth McDonald Chief Historian SECRET Approved For Release 2009/11/17: CIA-RDPO1-00569R000100080054-5
