At the end of July, forty boxes of confidential government documents were
moved from Peiping to Kaifeng. The Chinling* arsenal at Nanking Is prepared
to move northward. The only regular Chinese Communist forces in the
Shanghai-Nanking area are three garrison regiments at Shanghai and one at
Nanklxag. There are heavy troop movements along the Tientsin-Pukow and
Lunghai railroads. In early August, there was heavy northward rail traffic
from Hang rang.
2, Four Soviet-type jet planes formerly seen at Nanking are no longer observable
there, the only visible planes being six old Japanese models, Soviet jets
formerly based at the Chiangwan and Lnighua airfields in Shanghai have also
disappeared. the only remaining planes being four of a Japanese type at the
Chiangwan airfield and eight more at the Lu. .ua airfield.
Z. Troops of the Chinese Communist 32 Division are widening the Shangjao-Foochow
highway to 15 meters.** The Communists have assembled 400 medi%x sized genera-
tors and 2.000 boxes of ammunitiax- at Sbangjao, and are awaiting transport
for teem to Foochow. Twenty anti-aircraft guns were recently moved Troia
Nanking ane,,t Shanghai to Foochow and Canton. Twelve Soviet-type guns with a
1,500 meter range were shipped to Foochow.
