(LISTED DELOW) SUPPLEMENT TO 25X1 X REPORT NO. 1. Hatta feels if the Indonesian Government abandons its neutral policy in respect to the current situation that this move might easily result in shaking the faith of the people in their Government. Because of the prevailing situation in Indo- nesia Batts feels that deviation from a neutral policy would arouse "bad feeling" among the illiterate population to the detriment of the Hatta/Sukarno regime. This group feels that taking sides in the current situation would unite all opposition groups against them. 2. Mohammed Natsir- of the Uasjumi feels that the Indonesian Government regardless of the consequences should have the moral courage to risk everything for the sake of democracy and publicly side with the United States. He feels that the Government should not wait until the people and the Government fall victim to the leftist elements. Natsir is disappointed that the Hatta/Sukarno group lacks the quality of forceful leadership at this time. 3. Djuanda, the Minister of Economic Affairs, feels that United States polite offers Indonesia the greater opportunity to develop in the direction of her choice, but that unreserved acceptance of aid from the United States will create some opposition among those who do not understand the economic situation or global policy. 4. In general, all of the Indonesian leaders realize that their defense system is in poor condition and that drastic steps must be taken now to instill discipline in the army. Sjahrir is depressed by the general unrest in Java and feels that most of it is the result of the lack of discipline of the eriW and that there has been a lack of corrective measures taken against the unruly members.
