C;P l-tSSIFICATI N C0N 1D1 '1AL 25X1 A INFORMATION REPORT CD NO. 1AA 1e Approved For Re d i W(6N(MIAQRCXR82-004517 2 COUNTRY IIung;arr,4ur ania SUBJECT Railroad Line from I idapest to Bucharest 25X1A PLACE ACQUIRE DATE OF 25X1 A 215WOX 4. The usual speed is about 50 kilometers per hour, and the impression is that the oadbod is too weak to permit high speeds. 5? About half the distance. from the border to Bucharest has single track, but near Bucharest there is double track, At Curtice, 11 kilometers from the border, there are eight or ten sidings, 500 meters or more in length. About 50 kilo- meters west of Bucharest there is a large marshaling yard with some 15 tracks two or three kilometers long. Between Curtice and Bucharest express trains run 25X1 X at an ave, xxage speed of 75 kilometers per hour. 6. no evi:Eence that any ?art of the line has been converted o x'oa ~,au;e, E srai 1,., The railroad line from Budapest to the border station at L5kBshaza, a distance of 225 kilometers, is now mostly single track. Double track extends from Buda- pest for about 14 kilometers, and there is another stretch of about 11 kilo- meters between Szolnok and Szajol. Elsewhere the second track has been dis-- mantled; indeed, vast of Szolnok it appears that the dismantling must have taken place at least three or four years ago. The last. 90 kilometers or so before LAkbshdza were apparently never double-tracked. 2 any of the smaller stations have no sidings at all; others 'enerally have one short siding each. Szolnok, Szajol, and Bskescsaba are the only stations with a considerable number of tracks (8 to 15 each), and there a few stations having three or four. The yards at L5k8shaza have some eight or ton tracks. The sid- ings at Bekescsaba are said to be about 500 raters long. 1, A bridge just west of Szajol is crossed at normal speed; but the bridge over the Kir8s near Gyoma is under repair, and here the train slows down to under five miles an hour. .._ _ it ri NAVY - - -- -~ - SRB i}iST 1i3UTION AIR N BSI TWO document is hereby regraded to CONFIDENItAL in accordance with the WW of 16 October 1978 from the Director of Contra] Inteliigenoe to the Archivist of the United Buttes.
