1. The Zuckerraffinerio-Dessau in Dessau, a people's ounod enterprise, had, prior
to and during' the ,nr, a cre!-r of 1600 workers and twelve chemists. As of the
and of January 1950, it had a cretr of about 10 DO workers and only the following
three Cheri sts: Dint. Inn-. G1111enann, Dr. 2'ette, Dr. Piper. Hone of these
three people is a Comttnist.
2. At the and of November 1949, the Russians arrested the Director of the works,

sevonty-year.?old Kaatz, accusing him of having transferred funds to Test Gor-
nany. In January 1950, two more directors, 'Tiederraeyer and Gromziry, were
arrested, as trsll as the two head clerics, Tlartin 1111er and Kreutzsch. Their
arrest teas follow!aed, shortly afterwards, by the arrest of Chemist Dr. Karl
Bergt. After all members of the management and some of the leading techni-
cians of the firm wore arrested, the fissians installed one Stanoel, aged 45,
as Tauptdirektor of the works. Stengel, a mechanic by occupation, came from
the tolasses Factory in SchBnebeck (Elbe), where he had been active as an 5ED
functionary among the crew of the works. Ile is a confirmed Communist of long

charged not only with having engaged in Illegal money transfers, but also ?.4th
leaving furnished confidential information to 'Western powers.
In a ?dition to a number o'' smaller production items, such as yeast, the works
produce mainly ethyl alchohol and sut ar. The ?a3aohol is produced from plose
(wood shyer, TIolzzucker) in solution, as well tie from molasses of beet-root
:sugar. The result, after fermentation, is 961%' ethyl alcohol (C2H50R), of which .
the works had a daily ayutrsait of 50,000 liters an of January 1950. At the same
time, production of refined sugar from beets amounted to 100,000 kilograms a
day. The entire production of alcohol as well an of sugar., goes to Russia via
25X1A Stettin harbor. the alcohol shipped to-Russia is used
there for the rroduct?on of synthetic robber (Huns.).
4. The research division of the works has been enraged in the study of refining
and purifying organic substances, with onp?hasis OIL deacidifying and der..alifying
then. For this purpose, an artificial resin substance, ttofatit, has mainly been

used; this substance has been furnished to the works by the former IG works
in Wolfert, near BitterrPeld. Wofatit has shorn excellent xosulta in the de-
sa3..ificaf;ion of sugar solution. It has also been employed for the purifi-
cation of victuals, such as whey and malt residuum. By use of 'lofatit and
other purifying agents, the research division of the works has succeeded in
developing high-grade, ?whipp blo albumen and food seasonings; it has also
produced very pure lecithin from yeast. All results gained by the research
division have been transmitted to the Russians.
