OF PAGES 1 According to a moor reported on 12 November 1949, Luis Carlos Prestee had been in trgentina a few days previously. A second source at,empted to confirm this rumor but was unable to do so. However, he did learn that Prestos haj been in Argentina within the wt two or three months before proceeding to Uruguay. Daring his stay in Argentina, Prestos did not oonttot local Communist leaders. 2. At the end of October, Prestes was said to be hiding in the State of Santa Catarina at a shipyard which specialized in building small outboard motorboats. Prostes was reportedly maintaining eontiet with the city of Sao Paulo through the intermediary of two Paulistas. The first of these, Maria Cortasi, Rua Tuiguty, 1427, was backed by the Communist Party of Brazil (POD) in the Sao Paulo elections for alderman in 1947. The second, Ugo Tamberlint, who lives at Pardue Sao Jorge, is about 35 years of age. He travels to Santa Catarina frequently and returns to Sao Paulo with material received from Prestes. 3. Source learned that Prestos expected to visit Rio de Janeiro on 26 or 27 December in connection with the founding of a new Brazilian Cannunist youth movement. He was scheduled to meet with a cousin, A,upusto Prestes IMenezes, a physician, who is supposedly influential in the formation of the now movement. Apparently 25X1 X6 Menezes was advised that the police were cognisant of the planned meeting, because he abandoned his office at Rua Mexioe 81, and has not been located since. 4. It was learned from several Brazilian officials in Anapolis, State of Goias, that Prestes had been in hiding on Harold Levy's farm near Anapolis (of. 19499), Levy is reported to be one of several brothers controlling a large banking firm in Sao Paulo and is said to be the only one of the family with Covnunist views. He uses his farm as an asylum for Communists. 5. After his departure from the Levy farm, Prestos went to that of Epifanio Bezftorra,4 ex-Cormmmist Deputy from the State of Goias.
