1. Count Michael Karolyi, Hungarian Minister to France, was visited by Paul
Sebestyen of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs during which time
Karolyi learned that Bolgar is to be appointed Hungarian Minister to
London, a post Karolyi had long coveted.
26 Karolyi allegedly stated that he is now no longer anxious to represent
Hungary in Great Britain; after the suppression of Czechoslovak inde-
pendence he would find it impossible to offer an explanation for the pro-
Soviet attitude he had preached for ten years among his British friends.
3. Karolyi stated that he learned of daily rumors circulating in Hungary and
abroad to the effect that he would be recalled. Consequently, he is
seeking to secure for himself and his fanily adequate financial means for
an undisturbed life abroad. Recently the Hungarian Government committed
itself to pay some 27 million pengo (about S2,40O,Op0.00) as indemni-
fication for his properties confiscated during the Horthy regime. Karolyi
had insisted that he be paid in foreign currency and the Hungarian Govern-
ment was to pay a ccnsiderable part of this sum at the Hobiliar Bank in
Zurich. Karolyi has allegedly withdrawn five hundred thousand Swiss francs
and brought it to Paris through the Hungarian diplomatic pouch. Karolyi
has recently purchased a house in London.
