Note; The information in this report confirms and amplifies previous
reports on SiberLan Railways and particularly clarifies which railwaya under
the various Five Year Plans have been completed in Siberia.)
AMUR RAILWAY
16 The Soviet Far Eastern or Amur Railway--from Karymskaya (114-20, 51-40) along
the Shilka and Amur Rivera to Khabarovsk (Poli) (135-04, 4848) and Komsomolsk,
and from Khabarovsk to Vladivostoka-ivadminietered from two centers, Chita
(113-300 52-02) end Khabarovak. The following are the reasons for tha control
by these two cantons and the lines which are administered from each of the two
a. Chita; Because the former Transbaikal Railway-'from Slyudyanka (103-461,
51-40) to Karymakaya, with branches from Karymekaya to Sratensk (117-12, 52-16)
and from Karymskaya to Manchouli (117-294, 49-36)--was included in the ao-ealled
Molotovskaya (former Chitinnkaya) Railway-4, which covers the section tom
Slyudyanka to Syebodny (former Alekseyevsk 126-06, 51-23) with a branoh line
from Svobodny to Blagoveachensk (127-30, 50-16)0 opposite Heiho (127-261, 50-4).
b. Khabarovsk; This administration center covers the lines from SvoOoday to
Khabarovsk and Xomeomolsk ax l from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok. There are branch
lines to Birobijan (Birobidshan) (132-584, 48-47)4, from Voroshilov (13i-564, 43-46)
to Suifenho (131-094, 44-23) and from Vladivostok to Posietto (130-57, 42-42)1,
near the Korean Border.
BAIKAL-AMUR MADIETRAL (BAM)
2. In addition to tba oomplated Amur Railvey, the main lines of the Baikal-Amur
Magistral have also bee o comploted. The main line extend a from Taiahat (97-50,
56-10) northeast to Bocaibo (114-15, 57-50), gold mining center in tha Lena
District, then southeast through Aldan (125-22, 58-40) and the Lebediaii
(123-570 54-00 Gold Mines*, and crosses the Amur Railway to Jalinda Ozhalinda)
(123-580 53-30) Full scale exploitation of the railway And the area covered by
it will not take place until next year, when such handicaps as rater oupply and
minor details of construction will be completed. This line rune over frozen
soil, where the problem of water supply has become one of the most coaplicated
?nearing prolOams.
* Gold mines appear on various maps at the coordinates reported; howe'aor, the
town of Lebedinii is at (12e-25, 58-12)7

3, The BAM also includes some minor lines connecting the areas through which flow
the Zeya0 Selemja (Selemdzha), Bureya and Kerbi Rivers. The branch line from
Tygda (126-20, 53-08) to Zeya (127-180 53-45) is completed. Full scale
construction work is proceeding on the line linking Zeya with Ekimohan (133-000
53-05); this line must be ready by 1948. Ekimohan is already connected with
Komsomolsk by rail. Work has started on a line from Ekirchen to the gold mining
town of Kerbi (138-29, 52-26) and on to Nikolayevsk (140-51, 53-42). The line
from Ekimohan to Tterbi is to be complettd by 1948; the line to Nikolayevsk by
1950. Work has also begun on a line from Ekimohan to Udskoye (134-22, 54-.29),
copper and gold mining center; this line must be completed by 1950 because of
its strategic importance with respect to the Kurile Islands.
4. The railway is now in operation from the port of De Kastri (141..49, 51-28)0
opposite Sakhalin Island. to Sofiyekoye (139-500 51-34). The rail lire is
nearly completed from Sofiyskoye to a point (Wredne-Tambovskoye 137-52, 60-49)?
opposite Komsomolok, then south to Sovetskaya Gavan (140-18, 48..56) across the
Khrebet Sikhote A2in mountains; this line is expected io be opened no later than
1949. Also nearly completed is the railway connecting the so-called Uesuri
Railways from Sovaigino ounlocated) with Port Olga (13540, 43c.45), near Vladi-
vostok.
BAIKAlpOKHOTSK MAGISTRAL (BOM)
60 When construction was started on the Baikal-Amur Magistral, work was also begun
on the BaikalOkhotsk Magistral. The latter 4.8 now under extremely aooelerated
construction. The in BON line connects Bodaibo with Okhotsk (143.45, 59,45)0
along the Aldan and Gonam Rivers. By special order from Stalin this railway must
be completed by 1950. Also under construction is a line from Okhotsk to Kamchatka.
