Dear Senator D'Amato:
Mr. Casey has asked me to respond to your letter of
26 February 1985, concerning the Josef Mengele case.
Specifically, in that letter you requested that CIA reexamine
the documents which were released to you in redacted form, and
review our decision to delete the names of Felix Becker and
Jose Morales, aka Enio Varella Segovia. This review has been
completed and I have enclosed copies of the pertinent documents
with the names of those individuals included in the texts.
You also requested information concerning approximately
eleven individuals whom you believe have been connected with
Dr. Mengele. In regard to this request, it is my understanding
that you met with Assistant Attorney General Stephen Trott, on
18 March 1985, and agreed to withdraw the requests for
information concerning Dr. Mengele which you submitted to
various agencies. I understand that your agreement with Mr.
Trott applies to your request to the DCI of 26 February 1985,
and that we thus need not take further action with respect to
the request at this time.
It is also my understanding as a result of your meeting
with Mr. Trott that the Office of Special Investigations and
the U.S. Marshals Service will brief you on a regular basis on
the progress of their investigations. You may be confident
that we are cooperating fully with both of these components of
the Justice Department and expect to provide them with
information pertaining to the persons you identified in your
26 February 1985 letter.
If I can be of further service, please do not hesitate to
call on me.
