PLACE & p Two naval vessels of unknown nationality were observed at posi? tion 54o29lN 2. es northeast of Gedser Rev lightship The vessels sailed line ahead on southwest course in route 1. Speed estimated to be 16 knot 0 The foremost and largest of the vessels ran up an East German flag when it approached the light-ship. The vessels turned Around and returned in route 1 at the light-ship. They were kept under observation until they disappeared from view somewhere north of REgen? 1. The largest of the vessels is described as follows. ao It was painted gray and had a long forecastle and stern cut at a slant. A spar designed to be lowered in front of the vessel was placed on the front of the bow. The length was estimated to be 4.00 feet. b. The superstructure and the smoke-stack were built into one. Guns, apparently 40 mm, were placed on front of the superstructure and on each side of the smoke-stack. All these guns were covered. A larger gun in turret., approxi- mately 75 mm, was placed abaft on the superstructure. Six life rafts were placed right in front of this gun. A trellis mast was placed on the bridge right in front of the smoke-stack. A canvas-covered crows-nest was placed halfway up on this mast. Low circular wire rails and stanchions. A flagstaff'and two paravanes, one in each side, were placed abaft. smoke'-stack. A shoe that secured the bottom part of a whip antenna was placed on the after side of the same horizontal pole. In the same height as the radar there was-a pole turned backwards on which a flag halyard was placed. co A'small flag-staff was placed in the bow of the ship, and l UHF antenna, 1 short-wave antenna, and the.radar scanner. ,..The vessel had the following antennas: 2 VHF antennas, 25X1 There was a depth-charge launcher containing ep 25X1 iarges.
