1. The. Nationale Volk_ nee NVA, has been steadily militarizing the
eastern section of, the Island of Rligen. The NVA units are based
at Prora, a foimer Nazi durch Freude resort town,. located
about five or six kilometers' north of Binz'on the eastern shore
of the narrow strip of land which separatu'.the PXorer Wieck and
the 12einer Jasiunder Bodden.. Based at PrO are the following
NVA units'll

As.of,1997 a Soviet regiment was also stationed at. Prora but whether
the regiment is still there is not known. All the above NVA units
are being brought up to full strength as rapidly as possible.
2. Thel'headquarters ofthe NVA troops consist of two large, fortified,
bunker-type buildings situated directly on the shore, beginning
-about three kilometers north of.Binz and extending north along the
eastern ,shore for about,seven kilometers, and a Series of motor pools,
tank parks, parade arias, etc. The two main-building$ are unique in
structure. Each building is thirteen to sixteen meters in width and
three and one half kilometers:in.length, An open space of approxi-
mately two hundred meters 0epa atees the two buildings and directly
.:opposite the space is a concrete pier, approximately two hundred

3. All public traffic on`the Karow-Prora road is restricted. Only
during the height of the vacation season can the read be used at
all and then only at specified hours and at the vactioner's own
risk. The "Walter Ulbricht"-rest home for NVA officers is located
immediately adjacent to the NVA installations but outside of the
barbed-wire enclosure.
4. The NVA military units based on the eastern portion of REgen do not,
as far as is kncwn, have any responsibility for the defense of the
Jasmunder Bodden submarine base now being constructed by the East
German Navy, Seestreitkr&fte-NVA, on the western shore of the Jasmunder
Bodden on the Island of R gen. The Navy will be responsible for the
protection of the submarine base and the NVA units on the eastern
shore of Rbgen are a part of the general fortifleation of the eastern
pcrticn of the island.
