In September 1952 two men from the 1924 and 1925 classes from the village of Dona Studena (N 3-329 E 25-41) Byala Okoliya, were called up for temporary training consisting of a 30-40 day course. They were sent to barracks in Gorna Oryakhovitsa for that purpose. The men were trained with new weapons sent from the.USSR. as soon as one group was released, another was called, up. 25X1 2. A Border Guard unit is located at the railroad station of Podkova (N.41-25, E 25-24)., Kurdzhali Okoliya, ' and consists of 150 soldiers and 10 officers. Fuel Dumps Near 'Ruse A fuel dump is located on the bank of the Danube near Ruse, about 500 meters from the transformer for the electric power from Rumania and 300 meters from the sugar factory. The dump consists of five or six cylindrical tanks about five meters high and four meters in diameter. The tanks contain gasoline and other fuels brought from Rumania. A separate branch of the railroad line to 'Ruse runs to the fuel dump. Tank cars filled with gasoline and other fuels travel. on this line to the interior of Bulgaria. Three rows of cables run to the. transformer, which is an iron cube, the sides of which measure 1.5 meters. The transformer is placed on wooden girders, which are 12 meters high. Three rows of wires take the electricity from the transformer to Ruse. The area around the transformer is fenced in with barbed wire, but it is not guarded. New Highway from Ruse During June or July 1952, a new highway was begun in Ruse. 25X1 it will be an international 25X1 ogress as far as Polski Trumbe'sh (N L3-22, E 25.38), Turnovo Okoliya. From Byala to Ruse, the road runs near to and parallel with the old Byala-Ruse highway. It will go through the northeast section of Byala near the town slaughterhouse, where a bridge will be built over the Yantra River. Construction of the bridge has not yet started, although construction materials are now being brought to the area. At the present time, the work on the highway has been limited to surveying, digging and leveling the roadbed. the road will 25X1 make a turn at Polski Trumbesh in the direction of Tirnovo. The road is to be very wide and paved. 6. Construction of the road has been speeded up and new workers have constantly been sought for its construction. About 300 civilian workers and 50-60 .trucks are working near B ala. Airfield near Gabrovnitsa, Lom 0koliy 10. During the spring of 1951, construction of a new airfield near the village of Gabrovnitsa,.Lom Okoliya, was begun. it is'located about one kilometer north- west of the Gabrovnitsa railroad station. It is 2,500 - 3,000 meters long, runs in an east-west direction, and is about'1,000 meters wide. In 1951, con- struction was begun on a 200-meter wide landing strip made of granite blocks. It was rumored that the landing strip was to be finished during the fall of 1952 and that the field was intended for heavy aircraft (bombers). Border Guards Komandatura 62-32 in Breznitsa (N 4i-L0, E 23-140), Sandanski Okoliya 11. The komandatura is located on the western outskirts of the village of Breznitsa. This new zastava is located in the t'Trite groba"" (Three Graves) section, 10-15 meters north of the highway leading from Brez- nitsa to Yugoslavia, and is about 500 meters from the border. 12. The zastava building is a one-story building in the shape of the number 'III." The two wings of the building are 21 meters long and 9 meters wide and the main section is 32 meters long and 9 meters wide (or 800 square meters for the entire building). The building has three corridors and 14 rooms, including one guard-room, three offices, one Dimitrov room for cultural activity, three dormitories, one dining room, one kitchen, one storeroom, one bakery, and one laundry room) 13. The troops of the zastava are quartered in the old frontier post located about 50 meters from the new zastava building. The komandatura is located on the outskirts of.Kolarovo (N 41-22, E 2-3-06). 25X1 the newly constructed 18-A zastava building in the "Lopovom section is 500 meters from the border between the GS (Gorsko stopanstvo, Forest Management) and the border. The newly constructed building has the same shape and dimensions as the 16-A zastava building in Breznitsa, Sandanski Okoliya. They returned to Kolarovo at about 5 p.m. each day. The TKZS (Trudovo Kooperativno Zemedelsko Stopanstvo; Labor Cooperative Agrarian Farm) in Kovachitsa was formed in the Bering of 1945 and was disbanded in the fall of the same year.
