Each span was laid so that one end of each span was fixed and the other end was movable on rollers., to allow for expansion. Each span consisted of heavy "I" beams from pier to pier., covered with four-inch by six-inch section planks bolted to the "I" beam flange. The bridge was 13 ft wide, with eight feet for --Vehicles and two and a half feet. on each side for pedestrian traffic. Although the bridge capacity was 24+ tons., German "Tiger" tanks, weighing 70 tons, crossed the bridge in September 1943. 5. In August and September 1943, the German Air Force operated one and two engine aircraft from this field almost continually.
