The inhabitants of the Rayon center were mainly Russians, Ukrainians, Germans, and
Latvians who had been forcibly temoved to that area after the Russian revolution.
The few Kirghiz lived at only two of the kolkhoaes.
4. Most of the houses were built of clay mixed with straw. The area contained very
little wood for heating purposes and the inhabitants were forced to use dried cattle
manure. What little wood was in the area or brought in, was used by the rayon
authorities. This further angered the populus.

with the regime and the local authorities.
Each kolkhoz had tractors, seeders, combines, and other agricultural equipment. The
number of farm. machinery depended upon the amount of inhabitants in each kolkiioz.
Despite the very :fertile soil in the area, the majority of the people were near
starvation. At the time they were all very dissatisfied.
