The Colonial Section of the Liaison Bureau worked very hard to pro- mote the influence of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) in. all colonial countries of Asia.-L Its propaganda continually pointed out tb,,thelindependettzcountries"c5fdlaiatheleVils.(ofAest- ern"oolonialusm4.a. however, thisc tactic did not differ greatly frowthatc used in the non-Communist countPies. In its attempt to influence Asia, the WFDY sponsored sports events, "ban-the-bomb" petitions, travel for non-Communist students to WFDY functions, etc. Relatively more money was spent on Asia than any other target area and, occasionally, the WFDY even bought mimeo- graphing machines, typewriters, sports equipment, clothing, accor- &Jana, etc.sfor the use of the Asian delegations which attended WFDY functions. For example, a large number of such gifts was given to the various /titian delegations which attended the International Gather- ing of Rural Youth in Vienna during December 1954. Although the leaders of WFDY were generally complacent regarding their work in most parts of the world, they were particularly self- satisfied about Asia. At the WFDY Headquarters in Budapest, a *tory circulated which claimed that Bruno Bernini, president of the WFDY, 'IPA so aroused the militant youth of the Philippines with a speech oz colonialism in Peking during August 1954 that a riot resulted. in which 60 persons were killed. 4 No one at WFDY Headquarters found this story hard to believe. 4.
