in such a manner as to permit outside employment. The scientists re-
ceii extra pay for these outside jobs.
1. The Karpov Institute is located at Obusha Street No 10, on the, south
side of the street, in the Iolotovskij district of Moscow. It is de-
signed for chemical research exclusively, and is directly subordinate
to the Ministry of Chemical Production. The Institute is staffed by
scientists and their aides. Most of the scientists hold the title of
"Professor". They are classified as "scientists with a laboratory"
and "scientists without a laboratory", and their salaries are dependent
upon their status. Those in the first category draw Rubles six thou-
sand per month, while those in the second category draw only Rubles four
thousand. Many of the scientists employed at the Institute hold other
positions, either as teachers at the University or as planners and
supervisors of industrial chemical production. Their daily schedule,
which is posted on the main bulletin board of the Institute, is arranged
The Institute consists of two main.buildings which are utilized for
chemical research, the "Upper Korpus" and the "Lower Korpus". The
"Upper Korpus" is a building about 40 m long and 10 m wide. It has
three stories and a basement, which is also used for laboratories and
scientists' offices. On the third floor of the building are the offices
of the First Department, including the security files and archives.
The "Lowc,r Korpus" is .a two-story building about 58 m long and 12 m
wide. It is a more modern structure than the "Upper Korpus"; I would
estimate that it was erected in the 1920's. It also has a basement
containing laboratories and offices. On_the first floor is the library

of the Ministry of Chemical Production. In the stairwell of the-"extreme 25X1A
east wing the Bitterfeld Column for the production of heavy water was
erected. It was partitioned off from the rest of the wing:' Only the
top of the.column could be seen, projecting about five a above the roof
of the building.
4. Several other buildings are located in the southern part of -the compound.
The one-story buildings in the southeast part of the compound are the
carpenter shop, the forges, and the repair shops. The brick one-story
building in the southwest part of the compound is the building in which
the 700 atmosphere installation for the production of heavy water was
located. West of this building was a gas tank in which the hydrogen for
the heavy water installation was stored.
To the south, the Karpov Institute borders on the compound of the GIAP
(Institute for Nitrogen Production); a stone wall separates the two
compounds. The gate in this stone wall is usually looked.
