DD,U `e; -A RP Approved For Release 2001/09/01 : CIA-RD nQm 0Q0008-0,,,_Yll. -1 MEMORANDUM FOR: Acting Deputy Director Central Intelligence THROUGH Acting Deputy Director Administration FROM Chief, Information and Privacy Staff SUBJECT : Probable Compromise of MKULTRA Details The Information and Privacy Staff has been acting as the final review mechanism prior to release to the general public of documents pertaining to subprojects under MKULTRA. This review has been made on copies of documents already sanitized but not released to the public. When omissions are discovered they are marked in red ink and a duplicate set of documents are treated by blacking out these new portions to be sanitized. IPS discovered that one set of work copies-, the red and its blackened companion version, was missing. Although 58 documents showed oversights in their initial sanitization onl 25X1A three are considered to be significant. These mention (subproject 32, Document 3), University of Maryland (subproject STATOTHR 59, Document 5) and (subproject 57, Documents 42, 46, 48.) Extensive efforts were made to locate these resanitized work copies without success. Therefore, we must assume the worst; that is, that these copies were sent to two requesters, one receiving the red work copy and the other receiving the blackened version. Needless to say, I, with my final review officer, have changed procedures to eliminate further possible release of work copies. Approved For Release 2001/09/01 : CIA-RDP81-00261 R000300050008-0
