Our Order has unanimously voted to award you its
Freedom Award medal at our Annual Banquet in Washington,
D. C. This will be on the evening of Monday, April twenty-
eighth, at the Sheraton Park Hotel. The reception com-
mences at half past six o'clock, and the dinner, at half past
seven o'clock._ The dinner will undoubtedly continue until half
past nine o'clock. We appreciate that you have numerous de-
mands upon your time, and if you cannot be with us during
all the evening, we should be happy if you were able to appear
anytime during the period mentioned. A partial list of former
recipients is enclosed. Mrs. Walters would, of course, be
most welcome also. We should appreciate a telephone call so
that we may prepare our program for the printer.

The Order of Lafayette
1958
T he Order of Lafayette was founded by The Honorable Hamilton Fish
in 1958.
Each year the Order presents a Freedom Award to prominent individu-
als for their fight against Communism. Among those who have received the Free-
dom Award are President Herbert Hoover, His Eminence Francis Cardinal
Spellman, United States Senator Strom Thurmond, Mr. H. L. Hunt, Mrs. Claire
Lee Chennault, The Most Reverend Fulton J. Sheen, General Mark Clark, The
Honorable Clare Boothe Luce, United States Senator Barry Goldwater, The
Honorable Katharine St. George, Mr. William F. Buckley, Jr., Mrs. Robert
R. McCormick, General William C. Westmoreland, General Graves B. Erskine,
United States Senator James L. Buckley, General of the Army Douglas

that any weakening of our traditional friendship would help World Communism
and jeopardize the survival of Free Nations.
MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Regular Members
All Commissioned Officers of the United States Armed Forces, male or female,
who served in France during World War 1, or in France or French possessions
during World War II are eligible for membership in The Order of Lafayette.
American Officers who served in France during World War I with The
Lafayette Escadrille Flying Corps, The American Field Service, The French
Foreign Legion, or with our Allies, are eligible for membership.
Any Officer of the United States Armed Forces participating in an invasion

The Hereditary Register of the United States . 1974
or flight within the coastal areas of France or French Possessions is eligible
for membership.
American enlisted men who served in France or French Possessions during
World War I or World War 11 but who were commissioned later are eligible.
Also, American non-commissioned officers of the French Foreign Legion.
All recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor or the French Medaille
Militaire who served in France or French Possessions during World War I or
World War II shall be admitted as members without dues.
All sons and daughters of regular members are eligible for full membership
on reaching the age of twenty-one years.
A uxiliary Members
Auxiliary members shall be composed of any persons over twenty-one years
of age who agree with the principles, program and preamble of The Order of
Lafayette.
Honorary Members
The National Board of Directors is empowered to appoint Honorary Members
of The Order of Lafayette.
