CHART OF RECENT WORLD-WIDE ANTI-SEMITIC DEFACEMENTS
1. The following chart,'based primarily on United States press reports, is necessarily incomplete. The Federal
Minister of the Interior of West Germany has reported that about 200 anti Semitic and anti-Catholic incidents
have occurred in the last three weeks,
2. Any defacement of a synagogue, Jewish communal property or a building or home owned by a Jew and any daubing
of a swastika or anti-Jewish slogan is considered anti-Semitic for the purposes of this chart.
3. Excluded from the chart are acts of vandalism, defamation or intimidation, if not accompanied by a defacement
of a building.
4. The chart shows anti-Semitic daubings in 25 countries located in all six continents. Incidents took place in
124 cities.
5. In the United States alone, there were 71 incidents in 46 cities located in 18 states and the list is incomplete.
According to the New York City Commission on Intergroup Relations, there were 26 incidents about which it has
reports in New York City.
6. There was at least one incident in West Germany each day fron December 25 through January 13, 1960,
7. Arrests were made or convictions obtained in Cologne, Nuremberg, West Berlin, Offenbach, Marienborn, Bonn and
Frankfurt, West Germany, A group of eight men was arrested in Milan. In the United States, many young boys
were arrested,. two of whom were adjudged delinquent in New York City.
8. Local neo-Nazi gangs were blamed for daubings by police in Milan, Sao Paulo, Johannesburg, Baltimore, Jacksonville
and Mamaroneck, New York. The two men arrested in Cologne were members of the Reichs Partei, an extreme rightist
political party.

9. All of the persons arrested in the U.S.A. were under 18; all those arrested in Germany were from 20 to 25,
except for the "youngsters" (age not given) arrested in Marienborn.
10. The incidents took place in waves. From December 25 to December 30, they were limited to Germany. From
December 31 through January 5, they were reported in England, Belgium, Austria, Norway, France, Sweden, Greece,
Italy and Finland. On January 6, they broke out in East Germany. The first incidents in Latin America began
the same day. The Australian incidents began January 5th. The incidents in the United States began in New York
on January 2; thereafter, the chart shows incidents in five cities on January 6, six on January 7, four on
January 8, sixteen on January 9, eight on January 10, eight on January 11 and nine on January 12.
11. On January 8 the incidents spread to college campuses and thereafter there were daubings on six campuses.
12. Inscriptions in German were reported in only one U.S.A. incident on Staten Island but four "Heil Hitlers" were
painted elsewhere.
13. Roman Catholic and Protestant churches of various denominations were also daubed with swastikas in Germany,
Brazil, Austria, England and the United States.
14. In several cities, many buildings were daubed in one night in an identical manner, e.g., Dinslaken, West
Germany, Hamburg, Vienna', Linz and Oberndorf, Austria; Paris, London, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Columbus,
Mo.; and Santa Fe.
1 5,. Three youths, 21, 20 and 16 years old, were arrested in Queens, New York City on January 11. In the home of
the leader, John Wallace, were found swastika armbands, blank membership cards and anti-Semitic notes. Their
organization was called the "National American Socialist Renaissance Party.." They denied any connection with
recent swastika painting.
