Further reference is made to the Department's airgram A-48,
dated July 6, 1960, concerning closer coordination between
"Voice of America" programs and American Forces Network programs,
In this connection, the Department, through the International
Broadcasting Division, has agreed with the Armed Fcrces Radio
Service that the latter will be guided by the VOA news file in
its political and news broadcasts.
It is suggested that the United States High Commissioner for
Germany, at his discretion, discuss with the American Forces Net-
work in Germany the possibility of AFN using VOA and AFRS short-
wave news broadcasts broadcasts as guidance for its political and
news broadcasts.
If such arrangements cannot be made, the Department would
appreciate the views of HICOG on what other steps may be taken to
achieve closer coordination of AFN political and news broadcasts
with those of the Department of State,
