1. There are two goo; all-wtat:,n,ty roads Panesrey o Kaunas. The most frequently
traveled road is the one from PanevayJ,to Raznygala (55?31N, 24?17?E) to
Kedainiai (55?1711, 2l00 E) to Babtai (55?05'N, 23?47T) to Kaunas. The longer
road is the one from Rmevebs to Vadoklial (55?29"N, 24?26T) to Ukmerge
(55014'N, 24047T) to &I.unas. roads are well graded with smooth curves
and gentle slopes. it ia easy to drive 50 miles per hour on them. They are made
of crushed stone and are at all pIace at least two lanes wide. ,,The first route
does not cross any significant streams. The oecond crosses the Sventoji River
at Jonava (550049N, 24016(E) on a stone and steel bridge which is about 22 feet
vide.
2. The road from: Panevelys to Kedainiai through Krekenava (55?3211?,24006'El
is Only fair. X: has. on it in same of ithe low places but in general is
only graded. I open about ten months outLof the year to automotive, traffic. ?
3. Although there are to ways to go from Panevqlys to BirLi (56?13T, 240459E), the
one most frequented is the road through Pumpenai (55?56N, 24?19?B) and
Pasvalys (56004N, 24?25E). It JE pm all.weather gravel road - two lanes throughout
its length. The part between Panevew and Pasvalys runs through a well .rainell
forest area and is an exellent road. From Pasvalys to Biri'ai the road parallels
a tributary of the Maa River and crosses several small etreams. The second road
from Panevelys to BIT4a1 goes through Akmeniai (55?47'N, 24043'E) and Vabalninkas
(55058'N, 24044%. ,It is an all-weather gravel road - but it has not had as
Much gravel placed upon it or as good care.' However, he part from PaneveZ/ys
to Akmeniai has always been kept In best repalx because it is also the road used
in going to Daugavpils, Latvia (55?52'N, 26030T).

4. It is only possible to reach the village of Vakai (56?11?N, 23?1293) by auto
during the winter. The roadbed.is.clay and is seldom graded. Unless the summer
is very dry (unusual), cars chnOtreaCh the village in the warmer parts of
the year. Certainly the road cOUld'only sustain heavy military traffic when the
ground is frozen.
However* a narrow gauge railroad was built frot Vagkal to Gruila1(56?04T, 24?15'E)
to Joniskeas (56?02N, 24("09T) in 1939 or 1940 which makes it easier to travel

they are between 250 and 300 feet long. They
are built with stone piers and approaches and with two-lane steel decks.
7. Pinch of the area near Panevebs is heavily forested upon a sandy soil Secondary
roads which wind among the trees are seldom pass ble for cars or truoks. For
example, the road between Krekegava.and Ramygala is useable by car only when
? the ground is frozen. In the spring and fall it is too wet. In the summer
sand makes it impassable.
