1. The Chinese Communists made an attempt to build airfields at Iu>.asa and
Gartok (N 31-45, N 80-22) but the Dalai Lama o jeoted and the work on
the airfields was halted.f
2. In May 1953 there were about 1,000 Chinese Communist soldiers with five
field artillery pieces in the Chumbi Valley, near Phari Dsong (N 27-45,
E 89-10). The total number of Chinese troops du Tibet at this time was
over twenty thousand, stationed mainly in the Chumbi Valley, at Gartok,
at Budog (N 33-27, 2 79-42), and & "few miles north of Lhasa, at
Yardkorohen.(phonetic).
