CONFIDENTIAL SECURITY INFORMATION REPORT NO. SUBJECT Chilean Communists t Criticism of DATE DISTR. 28 July 1953 International Communist Publications NO. OF PAGES 1 25X1A REQUIREMENT NO. RD The Communist bookstores, Editorial. Austral and Libreria Nueva Americas refused representation in Mile for the publication El Movimiento Sindical Mundia3. Because of the difficulties of bringing magazines into the country or.sa e, the bookstores prefer to save their foreign exchange for the importation of books. !oreover, the price of this publication (U.S. twenty cents)!.i"t oisided too high for the Chilean worker. The Communists believe that the magazine should sell for ten Chilean pesos (about seven cents) and should be sold by individual subscriptions. The magazine is published every two weeks at Plaza de la Republica 6, Mexico, D.F. 2. The magazine, URSS, published by the Soviet Legation in Montevideo, is for- warded in large quantities to Santiago. Local Communists, however, find it of little interest, because its content is extremely old and is based on official. notices of the Soviet Government, many of which appear months earlier in the local Communist publications, E_l_S~igl_o_ and Nuestro Tierr o. The magazine, URSS is sent to Chile bearing the stamp, Impreso en Uruguay., and Editorial Austral handles the distribution to subscribers. No special import license is required, as magazine subscriptions are subject only to postal laws.
