3. Under the supposedly "new" Soviet system, exploration apparatus is put in
position and trial wells are run down 1,600 to 1,800 meters. If the results
are favorable, additional apparatus is set up at intervals of one kilometer.
Year Cobra in the Dambovita district, the apparatus is supposed to be sound-
ing 3,000 meters deep. The new well expected to result is to have four pumps.
These explorations are being carried on for Trust No.. 6. They have located
one well with a natural flow of sixty tons of crude oil daily.

Much of this increase is expected to result from allegedly new methods of
exploring and boring for oil The Sovrompetrol comparV and the Communist
Party insist that these methods are entirely Soviet inventions. The method
uses a "Brunache sounding or boring head" (sonde tete). It is reported
able to drill a well 1,600 meters deep in seven days, using a crew of
fourteen to sixteen men. There is also a special exploring apparatus.
Equipment and machinery for, this are supposed to have been built in the
Resita Machine Shops.

By 1955 the Rumanian' oil industry plans to produce a total annual oil
production of 1,250,000 cubic meters. The current capacity is 550,000
cubic meters of oil per year. It is planned to increase crude oil production
183 percent, as compared with 1950- Other petroleum products are expected to
reach a level of 226 percent. The plans also contemplate great improvement
in the transportation of petroleum. Pipe lines are to have annual capacity
of 2, 600, 000 tons a year.
Ii., The "spy-saboteurs" supposedly operating against the Rumanian oil industry,
who were condemned on 12 February 1953 at Pl.oesti, were accused of betraying
the secret of this method of locating oils Whatever other charges were
brought,9 this seems to have been the one regarded most seriously.
