Friday - 22 April 1966
1. I IJSW) Talked with Russ Blandford, House
Armed Services Committee staff, concerning possible agenda items for
the meeting with the CIA Subcommittee on 27 April. Blandford suggested
the McCarthy campaign in the Senate, the legislative package involving
niention~ of the Gold Coast, and the certain civilian airline activities in Laos.
I also advised him of the probability of the NEW YORK TIMES series
starting on Monday. He reminded me that he had been interviewed
previously by a NEW YORK TIMES reporter.
2. - JSW) Talked with William Darden advising
him of the NEW YORK TIMES aeries, probably starting next Monday. Darden
in turn advised me that the Agency Subcommittee is meeting Monday morning
to discuss McCarthy's efforts within the Foreign Relations Committee to
have members of that Committee sit with the Subcommittee.
3.1 JSW) Met with Senator Stuart Symington and
furnished him a copy of the Moscow broadcast on the MSU-Senator Harris
matter. The Senator was most appreciative and stated he planned to send
a copy of this to Senator Harris.
4. I I- JSW) Met with Senator Leverett Saltonstall and
reviewed with him his proposed newsletter an the Agency. Also furnished
the Senator with the Moscow broadcast item on the MSU-Senator Harris
matter.
5. - JSW) Met with Clifford Gaucher, in the office
of Representative Phi in, furnishing him with an unclassified AID memo-
randum on various German issues. Also briefed him on the thrust of the
OCI memorandum entitled "The Reunification Issue in West Germany. "
Mr. Gaucher was most appreciative of our assistance in preparing him for
his trip to Germany.
