1. SIGNIFICANCE:
THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS THE CONTINUING EFFORT BY THE NORTH
VIETNAMESE TO NEGATE THE EFFECTS OF AIR STRIKES AGAINST DRV
TRANSPORTATION NETS.
2. COLLATERAL:
THE BAN PA HON HIGHWAY BRIDGE OVER THE NAM MEUK
IS LOCATED ON ROUTE 6, BETWEEN LAI CHAU AND TURN GIAO. THE NAM
MEUK (RIVER) IS KNOWN TO BE AT LEAST SEASONABLY FORDABLE AT THE
BRIDGE SITE.
3. REMVIARKS :
STRIKE DATA REPORTS THAT THE BAN PA HON HIGHWAY BRIDGE OVER
THE NAM MEUK WAS STRUCK BY U.S. AIRCRAFT ON 23 AND 29 JULY 1965.
THREE BRIDGE SPANS WERE DESTROYED, ONE SPAN WAS DAMAGED, AND THE
HIGHWAY WAS INTERDICTED. POST-STRIKE PHOTOGRAPHY OF 29 JULY 1965
REVEALED RIVER APPROACH RAMPS UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN THE VICINITY
OF THE DESTROYED BRIDGE.
