SIGNIFICANCE: THIS BRIEFING BOARD REVEALS STRIKE DAMAGE TO TIIE HAI PRONG PETROLEUM STORAGE AREA. 2. LOCATION: THE PETROLEUM STORAGE AREA IS LOCATED AT 20-52-15N 100-39-32E, 2.2 NM iVEST-NORT1iWE5T OF HAI PRONG. 3. STRIKE INFORMATION: COLLATERAL REPORTS THAT SINCE THE BEGINNING OF JUNE 1900 AT LEAST FIFTEEN MISSIONS HAVE BEEN DIRECTED AGAINST APPROXIMATELY TEN POL INSTALLATIONS IN NORTH VIETNAM. THIS ACTION CULMINATED ON 29 JUNE IN THE BOMBING OF TWO OF NORTH VIETNAM'S MAJOR FUEL INSTALLATIONS AT HAl PHONG AND HA NOI. TIIE TWO STORAGE AREAS HIT REPORTEDLY ACCOUNT FOR SIXTY PERCENT OF NORTH VIETNAM'S POL RESERVES, AND IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THEIR DESTRUCTION WOULD CUT STORES TO A SIX-WVEEK SUPPLY. THE INSTALLATION CONSISTS OF THREE AREAS CONTAINING TWELVE, TEN, AND EIGHT VERTICAL TANKS, RESPECTIVELY. A BUNKERING PIER AND APPROXIMATELY TWENTY-FIVE SUPPORT BUILDINGS SERVE TILE AREA. SIXTEEN NAVY AIRCRAFT. NO SHIPS WERE REPORTEDLY IN TILE TARGET AREA. EARLY REPORTS STATE THAT THERE lVAS NO MIG REACTION TO THE STRIKE AND ALL AIRCRAFT WERE RECOVERED SAFELY. ORDNANCE EXPENDED CONSISTED OF THIRTY-THREE 7.25-INCH ROCKETS, TWENTY-FOUR 1000-POUND GENERAL PURPOSE BOMBS, AND NINETY-NINE 250-POUND GENERAL PURPOSE BOMBS. 4. EARLY REPORTS STATE THAT THERE WAS NO MIG REACTION TO THE STRIKE AND ALL AIRCRAFT RECOVERED SAFELY. 5. STRIKE DATA: STRIKE DATA REPORTS U.S. AIRCRAFT STRUCK HAI PHONG PETROLEUM STORAGE AREA ON 29 JUNE 1966.
