On 13 April 1984, Doug Olin of the staff of the Senate Budget Committee, and Richard Collins, of the staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, were briefed on the situation in Central America. The staffers were preparing for a trip to the region along with Senators Chiles and Johnston from 15-21 April 1984. The briefing was given by DI/ALA analysts 2. I covered the election outlook in El 25X1 Salvador, the status of the Salvadoran military and guerrilla forces, and possible scenarios for El Salvador's future. (The attached unclassified electoral chart was provided.) discussed the recent forced 25X1 resignation in Honduras of Armed Forces Commander Alvarez and its apparent favorable impact on the military as well as the civilian government. She also responded to questions about relations between Honduras and El Salvador and the economic burden imposed by refugees who have fled4from Nicaragua and El Salvador. discussed the outlook 25X1 of elections in Panama in May and the political uncertainties raised by Arnulfo Arias's candidacy.) 25X1 3.
