CONFIDE~'TIAL
taken to avoid any kind of eaaggeratioa is both the acting and the production.
Perhaps 3ust because I'm so enthusiastic about the film yon grill gather from my
account that it was cone-aided, highly ezaggerated propaganda film. But no.
It was true to life, restrained and beautiful in its dignity, sad gate even those
who knew but very little about conditiorra of the peasantry in Hungary before the
war the feeling that this sad worse had been the lot of these hardworking country
people. The actor playing the principal role is really a peasant boy, not more
than 22, and he?e only a student at the Academy of Lctiag. Lad yet I thick I can
truthfully spy that I?ve sever yet seen a piece of acting as good sad as de-oid
of all msaaerisma as his was in this splendid film. Speaking of films, Laurence
Olivier's "Hamlet" was given its first preview here yesterday, and I am one of
the very many who are keen to see it.
"Oh, Mother dear, before closing I mast tell you all about the lovely idea
which was carried out here during the Christmas holidarya, and of which unfor-
tunately I heard about only after Hew Zear. In almost all. ,the nationalised fac-
tories and enterprises, men sad rumen workers corked in their free time to make
toys and gifts for their own children, those of colleagues and. poor peasant
children. That's the nicest idea I've heard of for along time. One of my
acgnaintancss, who works for the Democratic 1'ederatioa of Hungarian i~omea, told
ms abort it but too late, for I would have loved to enlist in the drive either
knitting or carving. 8emember the doll carving I tried my hand at five years
ago at homey I'm sure I could have been oY some help. This movement of toys.
for Christmas for the corkers' children was shown in the newsreel the other day,
and yon should have seen the smiling faces of the men and rumen at work, In one
factory they rare making wooden dolls, trucks, etc., carving (seayY), painting,
and the roman rare busy seeing baby clothes and wrapping. In another place paint
bozee sere being prepared, trains, fanny-looking Jack-ia-the-bozos; at a third
place rumen rare bustling about the canteen kitchen baking, making sreete, coat-
fag sceetmeats rich icing, crapping the parcels, giving happiness to others and
enjoying themselves in the bargain.
"Nell, dearest, it's goodbye again for this cask for I mast be off to give
my Hngliah lesson to the Horvath boys. wove to you all, bless yon,
Zone ioviag daughter,
Betty"

"Dear Mothers lours of the 10th arrived this morning, sad I cas rather
disappointed at its being so short, but I can quite understand that you haven't
had much time these days, what Stith consoling Lunt Mary sow that Jim has been
called up sad earned that he might be sent to Malaya. I'm very dietresaed.
Poor kid -- he's dust out of school.
"Ls for ~ Dig bit of sews -- I'mm going oa my travels again, this timme t?
Tienna on a sporting holiday rich a couple of other students, and re hope to be
able to compete in skating rith some students there. ~Te'~e bass practicing
in the biggest outdoor skating rink here chich is almost the sire of Trafalgar
Square. Since figure skatlag was never my strong point, I?ve speciali$ed in
speed skating, and after our daily tco-hour training I certainly come home cith
a voracious appetite sad feeling very fit. Of course, tte're all great~.y looking
forrard to the thole avast, ss cell as to the trip itself. 11e're leaving sa
Sunday morning sad rill be away for about 10 or 12 days, Doa't sorry -- I
shall not fail to write to you from there. Yie also hope to do a bit of sight-
seeing, sad it x111 be fun to get to know the Austrian atadenta, compare views
and see what life is Like there. l~e're taking ao chances cith food and have de-
cided that each of na till take a pound of salami, a cheese, a boa of dry Oakes
and a big loaf of bread so that we can have a snack whenever we feel hungry.
"Oh, I forgot to mention in my last cask's letter that I was out of tutu
last weekend. A group of na went to visit ono of the provincial universities
in the tots of Debrecen. Ne had a very enjoyable time, attending as interesting
lecture on Saturday afternoon aa~ ~~~1~~1}~the local symphony orchestra

is the evening. ~fe spent Sunday morning doing come ewimm~ng at one of the indoor
pools-there. Later we made a tour of the university which ended up with a epleadid
Iunch given in our honor.
"In the afternoon we visited the Farm of a model farmer who has dust been
awarded a prise by the Government for his good and rational work. He is one of
the nev landowners, a dear old man of about 60, very proud of his achievements
and of his family of siz, three of whom are working is factories in Debrecen, two
studying at the university, Gad one, his youngest son, is the old chap's righthand
man at home. They specialise in the breeding of pigs and in poultry farming. lie
had tea, or rather a cup of coffee, with the family is their Wetly whitewashed
:kitchen, were shown Gad duly admired the newly installed electric stove, and the
new kitchen furniture. Gad then had a long chat. They are full of plans for the
future. They are e=pecting to loin a cooperative. One of the boys is stud;ing to
be a teacher, another is very keen oa his work in the paper factory, where by
attending a night course he is specialising himself in .one breach..
"The ~ouraey home was rather tiring, Ne travelled home with a number of
soldiers returning to town after their leave, and so the train was Tery crowdeS.
One thing that streak me was that here .the officers and the men travelled the ?ame
class Gad eat at the same tables in the restaurant car, dust as they do is the
barracks, rather different to how they do things at home.
"Do you know that my friend Hannah's wedding is taking place tomorrowt It
is to be at 12:00 A.M. at a cY~urch quite near to where we live. .They. both got
leave, of coarse, and are going skiing to the Tatra Mountains is C$echosla~akia
for their honeys oon. I have already been to Gee their two-room flat which is all-
ready and waiting for -them.
"I am afraid that's all for today, Mum. Love to you sll,
lour loving daughter,
Betty"
