ed For-Retease-2f )0/08/ A000100080001-3 -' - T .. 2 Nov 1957 T?EMORIMUM FOR: Deputy Director (Support) Position of the Office of Logistics Re The Feasibility of Pp-plying EDP to the Agency Iupply System R'?.F'ERENCE: Memorandum to Deputy Director (Support) from Chief, Management Staff, subject: "Electronic Data Processing Feasibility Study for Supply Division, Office of Logistics," dated 19 August 1957 1. The Office of Logistics has reviewed the referenced study and does not concur with those recommendations pertaining to the application of EDP methods to the Agency supply system. There exists an insuf- ficient volume to render an EDP operation economical. Its application would not result in savings of dollars and personnel, nor would it make for a more efficient system. The attached staff study prepared by this Office supports this position. Tab "A" of this study contains comments on that portion which deals exclusively with EDP application; 'd'ab "B" contains comments on that portion which relates to the supply system without reference to EDP; and Tab "C" contains random comments of industry and other government agencies concerning EDP. 2. The Office of Logistics believes that just as no system is perfect, and the current supply system is no exception, also there is no quick and easy panacea to effect improvement. Just prior to the referenced study, the Supply Division initiated a management program which has as its objective: modification of the present supply system in order to effect a simple, efficient, and economical system which will produce the best possible support compatible with Agency operations. Inasmuch as tangible proof of the value of EDP appears to be, at best, somewhat elusive, it is the considered opinion of this Office that the better course of action at this time would be to accelerate the present Supply Management Program. At some future date, this program will be analyzed as to effectiveness and, at such time, and if necessary, the feasibility of EDP would again be considered. 3. In view of the foregoing, it is requested that the Deputy Director (Support) disapprove the installation of the IBM RAMAC 305 as recommended in the referenced study. -RDP78-04376A000100080001-3 Approved For Release 2000/08/17: CIA-RDP7-Q# -00080001-3 SUBJECT: Position of the Office of Logistics Re The Feasibility of Applying EDP to the Agency Supply System 4. Although EDP is not recommended, it is believed that sufficient savings will accrue from the feasibility study which will more than justify its cost. 5. The Office of Logistics wishes to extend its appreciation for the splendid assistance and cooperation which they received from the Management Staff on behalf of this entire problem. 25X1A9a Attachment: OT, Staff Study re Subject The recommendation in paragraph 3 is Approved: Distribution: Orig - OL/PS w/attach 3 - DD/S w/1 attach 1 - Comptroller w/attach 1 - Mgt Staff w/attach 1 - C/SD/OL w/attach 1 - OL File w/attach 1 - D/L Hold w/o attach 25X1A9a OL/PS :ss/3357 (8 Nov 57) L.
