To: All Training Officers of the Agency
OTR RUSSIAN LANGUAGE READING COURSES AT HEADQUARTERS
1. The following Russian language reading
courses have been scheduled by OTR, to be presented
in the Headquarters Building. The classes are
scheduled during the day and are held in the Library.
A minimum of three students is required to convene
a class.
a. Russian Familiarization #752 (24 hours total)
Duration: Fe ruary 9 - 30 April 1971
Frequency: 2 hours per week
Goal: Familiarization with Russian
Students learn to transliterate from Russian to
English according to the Board of Geographic
Names system. They also learn a small amount of
vocabulary and grammar.
b.. Russian Grammar #753 (200 hours)
Duration: 8 February 1971 - 3 December 1971
Frequency: Monday through Friday (1 hour daily)
Goal: Slight reading proficiency
This course presents the fundamentals of Russian
Grammar along with a limited general vocabulary.
The objective is to give the student the gram-
matical tools which will enable him to read and
understand, with the aid of a dictionary, Russian
at the elementary level.
C. Russian Reading Level I #754 (200 hours)
Duration: 8 February 1971 - 3 December 1971
Frequency: Monday through Friday (1 hour daily)
Goal: Elementary reading proficiency
This course represents a continuation of the
Russian Grammar Course, which is considered
prerequisite to enrollment in the intermediate
course. However, equivalent knowledge of Russian

gained by other means usually will suffice for entrance to this
course. Readings include history, literature, and economic
geography.
d. Economic and PoliticalkReading(Russian Reading
Level II #755 (100 hours)
Duratir-on:~8-February 1971 - 25 June 1971
Frequency: Monday through Friday (1 hour daily)
Goal: Intermediate reading proficiency (with the aid of
a dictionary)
This course is a continuation of both Russian Reading
Level I as described in subparagraph c. above, and the
Economic and Political Reading Course which began
8 September 1970. The readings consist of articles from
current Soviet economic and political journals and news-
papers.
e. Advanced Russian Readinn #756 (60 hours)
Duration: 8 February 1971 25 June 1971
Frequency: 3 hours per week (Monday,. Wednesday, Friday)
Goal: Intermediate (plus) reading proficiency (with the
aid of a dictionary)
Students should have completed the equivalent of courses
b., c., and d. described above. This course consists of
reading and analyzing Russian texts from the grammatical
standpoint and thus serves as a comprehensive review of
grammar.
2. It has been estimated that two hours of outside study will be
required for each hour of class participation in the five courses
described above. Only those individuals who are able to maintain an
excellent attendance record should apply for admission to these
courses.
3. Personnel wishing to enroll in any of the above courses
should submit Form 73, "Request for Internal Training," through the
Training officer to OTR/ISS/AIR by 22 January 1971.
4. Further information regarding the above courses may be obtained
