LANGLEY TECHNICAL SECTION
We have started plans to consolidate the spare parts system for
the Electronic and Wire Units. This will free storage areas for
additional work space.
I. Wire Unit
1. Outside Area Activities

a. Wired in a simulated field station at the

a. G.S.A. has completed the work in the new Red Frame Room.
Cable racks were installed, lights were lowered, and AC
power was terminated.
b. Installed a 250 ampere power in the Washington Terminal
Facility Section. This is to meet new Signal Center expansion
requirements and to prepare for the future MAX installation.
c. Relocated ten KSR printers in the Washington Terminal Facility
Area.
d. Removed all teletype equipment in the Telecon Room.
e. The service schedule is current for this period.

II. Electronic Unit
1. KX-3 Secure Voice Program
a. Audible alarm and ringer modifications were performed in six
different locations.
b. Three Kr-3 units were loaned to the C&P Telephone Company for
testing the console.
c. Troubles reported and corrected for the month are as follows:
1) Set Troubles - 49 each
2) Distant End - 5 each
3) Operational Error - 16 each
4) Telephone Company - 9 each
TOTAL: 79 each
d. The preventive maintenance schedule is current. All units are
now undergoing monthly and quarterly checks.
2. CIA CIFAX - 7th Floor
Four troubles were reported and corrected this past month.
3. Microwave System
a. Three troubles were reported and corrected. The auxiliary power
25X1A6a unit at was checked and a new automatic timer unit was

b. The microwave equipment for the
25X1A6a system from Headquarters has been installed and tested.
We are now waiting for C&P Telephone Company to connect the lines
from the broad band switch to the Headquarters microwave site to
complete the system.

II. Electronic Unit (Continued)
4. HY-2/KG-13 Saigon/Washington Secure Voice Circuit
The remote position for the handsets and tape recorders has
been removed from the conference room and re-located to the Signal
Center training room.
5. KY-5 Secure Voice
Eight troubles were reported and corrected this past month.
This figure does not include the Distant End problems.
6. DCI/SO Very-High-Frequency Net
One problem was reported this month.
OVERTIME
A total of one hundred and two hours of overtime was worked during this
reporting period.

1. Staff Employees -- 40 Hours.
2. Contract Employees - 32 Hours.
3. Staff Employees donated in excess of 70 hours this month.
1. A scale model of FTS was constructed from styrofoam and is being
utilized for future planning.
2. An ASR-100 Alignment Procedure was tested at FTS and appears to be
satisfactory. No special test jig was necessary to align the units.
3. Five ASR-100 Transceivers were given a water immersion test and all
units were acceptable.

A separate report will be submitted concerning this work.
5. The AC-3 Antenna Couplers tested at FTS have presented difficulties
with the internal dummy load and the associated thermal overload
interlock. A number of units were rejected.
25X1A5a16. Ten Recorders were rejected for mechanical and
electrical faults. The overall mechanical quality was poor.

REHAB UNIT
1. One-hundred-eleven items of electronic equipment was processed on
PTI's, thirty-six items on job orders, fifty-five items on repair
requests and four items on cargo.
2. Sixty-seven items of TTY equipment on receiving, thirty-six items
on cargo, two items on job orders and four items on PTI. Thirty-two
items were major pieces of equipment.
3. A prototype adaptor kit for the KWM-2A was constructed and sent to

ENGINEERING UNIT
1. A General Test Procedure for Tape Recorders has been started and
an outline of proposed tests was distributed for comments. A
number of test standards and text books were requested through OC-E
Library.

long delayed delivery of the LA-40A Spectrum Analyzer will be
further postponed. The possibility of bankruptcy is very real
so a suitable replacement analyzer is being investigated.
3. Test procedures for the R-390A, Bayside 990PW, AC-3 Antenna Coupler,
HFAS-7A, OS/A-8 and the ASR-100 are completed or being written.
4+. The Bayside 99OPW Transceiver was tested at Stockton, Calif. and
test procedures were reviewed. A water immersion test was un-
satisfactory but is reported to have been improved.
5. The HP Symposium on Test Instrumentation was attended on 20 - 21

and the Kahn Exciter.

CALIBRATION UNIT
1. Thirty items of test equipment were processed and returned to
service.
2. Eleven new pieces of test equipment were checked and issued
for cargo or stock.
3. The Motorola Frequency Standard at FTS had a power supply failure
that allowed the crystal oven to completely cool down. The unit
was repaired and the error was approximately I part in 109 one
hundred hours later. A continuous phase comparison with WWVB
shows the present drift at less than 2 parts 1011 per day.
MECHANICAL UNIT

POWER UNIT

1. The automatic timer in the transfer switch at as found
to be defective. A priority shipment from provided a
replacement unit and the tower installation is back to normal. 25X1A5a1
2. Installation of a 40 HP Motor-Generator set at FTS is complete.
This gives FTS capabilities of testing 50 cycle equipment with
high power requirements.
3. Two power units f/u/w the 8-PAC were inspected. Two additional
units are still to be tested. A comprehensive inspection report
will be submitted when these units are checked.
4. Parts were inspected for eight cargo vouchers.

1. Material checked for receiving consisted of 135 debit vouchers
totaling 396 line items. Material checked for cargo consisted
of 18 shipments from stock totaling 39 line items.
2. The Halco HT-2 Transceivers are being checked 100% because of
rejects for low RF output on the Air to Ground Transmitter.
Fifteen units have been rejected of 118 inspected. The present
backlog of HT-lD and HT-2 Transceivers is 531 units.

Discussions were held regarding the operation of the 25X1A6a
T&I Section.

3. A quarterly request for teletype spares from
on 15 and 21 October respectively were received. They consisted
of W( requisitions with a 1,000 line items. They have been
screened and forwarded to the warehouse to be filled.
L. Recommended to OC-S an amended parts list for the KY-3A spares.
