1. A rather substantial percentage of the total Laboratory
capabilit was devoted to completion of the first phase
of the Roadwatch Communications System during this
reporting period. This phase required the assembly and
checkout of ten field units (RS-700) including
electrical and mechanical modification of the ASR-100's.,
two mechanical modifications of the ASR-l00 battery trays
and fabrication of the CK-36 keyer applique units. In
addition, seven aircraft relay systems (RU-700) each con-
sisting of a modified Bayside 990P transceiver, Porta-Mobil
transceiver, Laboratory-built control unit, Laboratory-
constructed portable case, and a pair of Laboratory-built
aircraft antenna, systems were assembled. The base station
(AS-700), one of which was required, consisted of a Porta-
Mobil transceiver, a Northern 174 frequency shift converter,
a 100-foot trylon mast with rotor, a Laboratory-built base
station console, a, Laboratory-built dual vertical yagi array
antenna, and a modified ASR teletype system. Design of the
aircraft antenna systems included running approximately
twenty different antenna, patterns utilizing
aircraft similar to those proposed for this phase one
operation.
2. During the evening of 19 October, the Laboratory conducted the
second in a series of tours representing a, portion of the
