It was noticed that the message preambles as received at the base wore greatly foreshortened. The field sot was, therefore, returned to Buffalo on 2i- Septem.-acr. A i onostable cir- cuit in the field set reccivcr-exciter delays message transi'!ission for 300 milliseconds to prevent transmission during the base sounding period. A capacitor lead in the monostable had broken, resulting in "early" transmission (that is, before the base is prepared to listen). One failure also occurred at the base. A diode shorted in the interference detection receiver second I.P. As a result we were sounding on channels that may have been too noisy for message reception. This may have caused a lower ratio of message confirms to trans- missions than that of which the system is capable. The tests have been running extremely well from the standpoint of equipment perforr.ance. Nature, however, has not been as kind. Solar disturbances and electromagnetic storms seem to be norrial conditions. For several test days we have been "wiped out" completely. Of course, it is interesting to observe system operation (or failure) during these unusual conditions, but we have had more than our share.
